“Luxurious SA stopover”
Reviewed January 18, 2012

After 2 days working in Adelaide we decided to spend a weekend in SA before returning home, booking the boat house at Birks harbour as the centre for a Fleurieu peninsula break. After travelling through McLaren vale visiting wineries we were captivated by the boathouse and did not want to leave. The decor and atmosphere of the interior and the deck make this a very easy place to unwind and relax.

We enjoyed our four days staying in the beautiful, spacious Garden Retreat. The weather & the setting were perfect for reading around the pool or watching the cricket - the most relaxing holiday in years. There was an amazing variety of birds & boats enjoying the waters of the Murray visible from our window through the pine trees.
The house is fabulously appointed, from the large beach towels, wine glasses, crockery to the barbeque & out door living areas. Wendy provided us with great suggestions for breakfast & dinners & with generous provisions for preparing our own meals.
This was our second visit & we will be back!

Room Tip: We have stayed in the Garden Retreat & the Boathouse - they are very different & equally enj...

We stayed in the boathouse and enjoyed every minute of it. The location is fantastic - beautiful views from so many of the windows. The decor is very tasteful and comfortable and made for an extremely relaxing and enjoyable weekend. I am aware that a previous reviewer felt that privacy was lacking but we really did not feel this was an issue. One passer-by on the jetty looked in at one stage - if this is an issue it is very easy to closer the curtains on that window. There are windows overlooking the private decking area that also enjoy beautiful views. We dined in Aquacaf and fell in love with the food. This was a comfortable 30 minute stroll along a beautiful walkway. We also enjoyed strolling around Goolwa but spent most our time at the boathouse as it was so heavenly.

Room Tip: The boathouse is exceptionally located.

We recently stayed at Birks Boathouse for a quick 2 night getaway. As soon as we opened the door we were impressed. It was a cold winters day and there was a roaring fire to greet us.
The boathouse was tastefully decorated in cream linens and sofas. It is one main big room (converted from an original boathouse). One end is the very comfortable queen size bed, and at the other end is the very comfortable seating area with combustion heater, and a view straight on to a small marina and the River Murray. There was a well stocked kitchenette with a basket of breakfast goodies and a bottle of wine.
The bathroom was very clean with shower, claw foot bath and toiletries for our use.
The owners live just across the road and are there should you need anything.
The boathouse had enough books for 6 months of reading, many on the history of the river.
Goolwa is a lovely town with many nice restaurants and galleries..
We will definitely stay again.

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in January in the Garden Retreat of the Birks River House and absolutely loved our time there. The retreat was enormous with a stunning large bedroom with ensuite, huge living area with great couch and big screen tv (perfect for stretching out and watching the tennis!) and a great kitchen with everything you could ask for in it. The surrounding grounds and swimming pool were fantastic and also very private which meant we could relax by the pool all afternoon with a good book and a few drinks which is exactly what we were after! Wendy was an extremely helpful host who made sure we could settle in immediately with an extremely thoughtful basket of provisions left for us in the kitchen (breakfast items, lovely wine & port, crusty bread, fruit and some great nibbles). She has also done a great job with the interior design of the retreat with everything feeling very luxurious, whilst also practical and relaxed at the same time! Nothing more to say except we will be back for sure!

We enjoyed our stay at Birk’s Boathouse very much. It was relaxing and peaceful in an unique setting. We sat and read looking out onto the marina and just taking it easy, a lovely way to spend a long weekend.

My husband and I stayed two nights at the lovely Birks Harbour Boathouse and our only wish was that it could have been longer. The beautifully decorated house was so cozy with all the comforts of home, even a pre-laid fire ready for a match. The lovely views from the private deck and out the large windows toward the marina. Wendy and Phil Watson had the cupboards stocked with everything we needed for a lovely couple of days and were available if we needed anything. They were very personable and we were happy to meet them.
There is no internet but it's so peaceful, we didn't even use the TV!
The perfect place to get away from it all.
