On the Wallaby Lodge

We were welcomed into the hostel like members of the family. Excellent advice from the staff on what to see and where to go. Our grandson went on the night canoe expedition and we all managed to see a platypus at twilight. Home cooked meals and clean accommodations completed the package.

Stayed here as part of an overnight trip run from Cairns. Despite being a little older than the average backpacker - I really enjoyed the trip. The guides make a great effort to have everyone mingling and by the end of the day it was like 1 big happy family. The lodge is simple but very homey. Impressed that we were given our own dorm rooms as the place was fairly quiet in the leadup to peak season. The night canoe trip was lots of fun, they take you to the local creek to try to spot platypus each night (no luck for me) as well as put on a nightly bbq whcih was yum. Got an added bonus of showering with a green tree frog that was living in that shower cubicle!

I can´t tell you about the rooms, we stayed there with our tent. The hostel provides good information about the Atherton Tablelands and offers nice tours. The staff was a bit too busy with themselves - was a bit like disturbing an apartement sharing community.

The lodge is nice and the staff was very friendly and helpful. They gave some good tips on how to spot a platypus, which we did! We enjoyed their BBQ and went on the night canoeing wildlife tour on Lake Tinaroo. We saw lots of possums, but the highlight was seeing two tree kangaroos!

I stayed at 'On the Wallaby' because I needed a base to explore the Atherton Tablelands and I wasn't disappointed. I arrived late at night with no booking and I was given a friendly welcome anyway, always a good sign. The hostel itself is clean, comfortable, extremely laid back and full of character. I can recommend it without hesitation to anyone heading in that direction.

The hostel offers a good range of activities based around getting out into the local environment. The local rainforests and lakes are well worth visiting. Taking a night time canoe trip on lake Tinaroo to look for nocturnal wildlife was great and I saw many possums, pademelons and tree kangaroos as well as a roosting flock of a few hundred brolgas. Also worth a visit is the nearby Curtain Fig Tree, impressive by any standards.

I was very glad that I stayed at 'On The Wallaby' and if you are considering doing so then you can book with confidence.
