“Peaceful and perfect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2009

My partner and I enjoyed our stay at Kookaburra Lodge. Kookaburra lodge is a small motel, which doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. It is quiet and in a lovely garden setting. The rooms are simple. They are very clean and very comprtable and made to feel homely. We stayed in the end room, which was particularly private. The owners are very helpful and friendly, the town of Yungaburra is an excellent place to base yourself for the southern tablelands. Overall we haven't anything bad to say about my stay.

First off, let me say the owners are very gracious but the property itself is pretty darn run-down and shabby. Maybe that is all one can expect out this way but we were disappointed. The room was dark, tiny and had bugs. Reminded me of a bad Motel 6 off the highway somewhere in the US. There has to be a better option in the area, there just has to be. We left after one night as my wife couldn't bear spending another night in the jail cell they call a room.

Not that Yungaburra has many hotel options, but we were really glad to have picked the Kookaburra Lodge. We stayed here for two nights at the end of February 2009. Upon arrival, the host, Mike, did not find our reservation in the system. Mike was very gracious and appeared quite pained by this realization. Lucky for us it was the low season, so he still had a room available at the rate we had reserved. We we were given lucky #7.

The room was basic, but very clean and well organized. It was all you need in a motel style room. We enjoyed the table and chairs provided right outside to enjoy our breakfast and to listen for the groups of sulphur cockatoos and lorikeets whizzing by.

There aren't a lot of places in Yungaburra to eat, so the the cook to order breakfast (brekkie) each morning was yummy and convenient. There was a surprising number of items to choose from. They will also do a wash and fold of your laundry for a nominal charge . We used that service and it was completed the same day and was neatly folded and in our room when we returned from a day of exploring!

The area surrounding Yungaburra is quite lovely with the patches of farmland and rainforest. We enjoyed our entire time here, which was way too short. We did get to see the platypus in residence at the viewing platform on the edge of town, which is why we picked this as a destination in the first place.

Kookaburra was the best overall value we had on our entire trip. :) My husband and I will totally stay here again when we make it back to this part of Australia!

We cannot recommend Kookaburra Lodge highly enough. The service was exceptionally friendly and helpful. The room was excellent value and the area is beautiful.

Due to car problems, we were running late on the day we arrived. We called ahead and the proprietor was kind enough to stay open late waiting for our arrival. He then called ahead to a local restaurant and asked them to stay open a bit later so that we could have something to eat. We also needed to make a couple of urgent telephone calls back to the UK. Not only did the proprietor help us to make these, he insisted that we need not pay anything extra. Given that our room was already excellent value, this generosity was much appreciated.

The room itself was comfortable, although perhaps a little on the basic side. Nevertheless, for the price it more than met our expectations. There was a lovely veranda outside and we enjoyed an excellent breakfast there.

This is the sort of place that deserves to do well. If you wish to explore the Atherton Tablelands, this place would make an excellent base.

My husband and I spent 5 nights here and had a lovely stay. Yungaburra is in a good location for exploring the tablelands, and the village itself is very nice. There's a pleasant walk by the creek and of course the famous platypus viewing area. We saw two platypuses on our second try.

Kookaburra Lodge offers excellent value ground floor rooms with ensuite and your own sitting out area, some directly overlooking the garden and/or pool area. The rooms are equipped with fridge, kettle and tea/coffee making facilities, flat screen TV and air-con. Laundry service is available. The rooms aren't huge but they have everything you need and are nicely furnished and clean. For the price they're fantastic.

Breakfast is extra and is brought to your room (between 7ish and 9ish if I remember correctly - you choose the time you prefer). You can either have breakfast in bed or at your sitting out area. Prices were reasonable, e.g. $9 for bacon, sausage, egg, tomato and toast or $6 for old fashioned porridge with cream and brown sugar (my favourite!). You simply fill in a tick box form stating what you'd like and hand it in at reception the night before.

The owners were very friendly and helpful, and the free internet computer in reception was very useful. The connection was fairly slow, but this was one of only two places we stayed in a month long trip that had internet available (other than wi-fi) so we were pleased!

There's plenty to see in the area. Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine are only a few minutes drive away. Both have walks circling them and we saw musky rat kangaroos, a Boyds forest dragon, a snake and lots of birds. The tea room at Lake Barrine is a great stop for lunch or a Devonshire tea, and the lake cruise is very informative and great for wildlife spotting - a lovely way to pass an hour.

The various waterfalls and Hypapamee crater are also must-sees. Don't miss Mungalli Creek Dairy for the best cheesecake in the world (Sicilian - chocolate orange). You can get a piece to take out as well and have it sat outside your room with a glass of wine after dinner.

The only thing I didn't like about Yungaburra was that the restaurants close early (7pm is about as late as it goes for a table reservation), plus they're quite pricey. The only other eating option is a take-away (also closes early), which was OK but not brilliant.

Overall I thought Kookaburra Lodge was a great place to stay and I'd highly recommend it.

Of the 11 places we stayed in Queensland, KL gets our “overall value for money” top prize. It is a simple, unpretentious, well-organised, friendly motel set in tropical gardens on the edge of Yungaburra village and within easy walking distance of restaurants and a pub. Our $80 room was not large but very clean, quiet, insect-free, and with an unobtrusive flat screen TV, a comfortable double bed, and good shower (shampoo/conditioner provided). Each room is entered via a small open veranda with table and chairs where optional (very good) breakfast is served for a reasonable additional cost. You can´t cook in your room (apart from tea/coffee and a fridge for that early evening beer), but you have unlimited free access to internet, swimming pool, and birdsong. Our host, Mike, is a straightforward, likeable guy who couldn´t have been more helpful. If you want a well priced, romantic retreat, cleaned daily, set in the hills behind Cairns and with great rainforest walks (try lakes Barrine and Eacham), then you will find this hard to beat. Excellent.

  • Liked — morning sun on the veranda, birdsong, Mike, fish & chips in the pub, walking at Lake Barrine
  • Disliked — I suppose a bigger room and more private veranda would be nice: but hey - for 80 bucks?
