“A peaceful and enjoyable interlude”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2014

We had just visited the very moving Avenue of Honour memorial to our departed Afghanistan soldiers and their dogs. So this café came as a wonderful respite. We ordered and sat in the shady garden with beautiful trees and quaint decorative pieces. We were not disappointed with our coffees. We were warmly greeted as they were distributed. Coffees came ready to drink and were most enjoyable. The home made cakes scrumptious, as were the scones, jam and cream. So delicious. We did not wait long and we were impressed. Well done indeed. We will dine again if back in Yunguburra.

“Never again”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2014 via mobile

50 minute wait for a blt (after enquiring 4 times), and a 40 minute wait for a green chicken curry. Scone was drowned in strawberry jam which made it almost impossible to finish. Coffee cups both came out dirty. This place needs to close off the entrance to the right of the counter (as if you are ordering)/kitchen, as its uncomfortable when there is many people waiting to be served, plus you trying to walk in. The 'cheese platters' that hang down near the counter make it feel very cramped. Ever since I was a kid this place has made me, and many others feels claustrophobic. Menu is all over the shop. You have a hardcopy on the table, other food in a fridge near the counter, chalk/white boards with other food available at the counter too, its very confusing. Perhaps if they get rid of the arts that they are 'selling' and focused solely on food, it would make it much more roomy and comfortable.

“Yummy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

We had both breakfast and lunch at the Whistle Stop Café. Both times we were impressed by the menu options and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We felt the meals were a reasonable size and value for the price - especially the breakfasts.

“Not the greatest cafe in town”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2014

I dropped in for a quick lunch when going back to Cairns for the weekend. The place looked quite busy and so I thought it must be rather popular! Popular for badly cooked food or possibly because it was the only place to have lunch that day, as I was told by one of the locals.

First off, I got very surprised by the little girl working at the counter, trying to take orders while the other two women were running around the kitchen cooking and making drinks. She didn't seem to be familiar with the menu nor with its prices when dealing with me but not that much of a big deal as I only wanted a sandwich and a small coffee.

I was hoping to read my book somewhere on the corner but none of the tables looked clean nor were set up for the next guest and so I picked a table outside but, again, it was rather messy. 30 minutes later, my meal arrived. It was quite a big serving, but I found the sandwich to be disappointingly bland, with hardly any seasoning, no fresh herbs (other than on the bread itself), no flavor in the eggplant and hardly any pesto. Maybe instead of serving two massive pieces of bread, one properly grilled sandwich with small mixed green salad or arugula on the side could be a better idea?
