The owners, John and Pam, are the quintessential hospitality people. Apart from a wonderful product in a wonderful place, they go out of their way to make you welcome and comfortable, My partner had lost her camera in nearby Mossman Gorge - using their knowledge and contacts the camera was found and returned whilst we were out on another super trip in the area. If you want a romantic place this has to be it.

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful two night stay at Marae. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast each morning was fantastic (our favorite during our 26 day trip in Australia and New Zealand!). Loved the peace and quiet away from any city noises. All the guests (various birds) at breakfast made the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend a stay here. Great base for visiting Daintree and Port Douglas.

If you're looking for a beautiful place with specialized attention away from touristy locations, this is it! John and Pam run an amazing place here. We stayed in the downstairs room that had a full length door opening out to the garden and pool. We felt like royalty with a touch of fantasy when Kermit, the resident green tree frog, made his appearance. The hosts are delightful company with great stories to tell who make you feel as though you're the only people who've ever stayed there. Breakfast is delicious and beautiful on the terrace and stopping in the late afternoon with them for a glass of wine is a real delight. Plus.. they're locals who know all the tour people personally and will gladly book whatever you'd like. You can trust them completely on this so no need to do lots of research on your own (like we did!) Just ask for their recommendations. Can't say enough about this wonderful place. We'd go back in a heartbeat. That said, if what you're looking for is a place where you can walk to restaurants, this isn't it. It's off in the country where you can leave your windows wide open with no fears.

Go. You won't regret it.

We had the most fabulous time in Port Douglas and could not have enjoyed our stay at Marae more! Pam and John were absolutely wonderful! The breakfasts each morning were perfectly delicious, our room was clean with a lovely view and they could not have been more gracious hosts. They were very knowledgable about the local restaurants, tours, shops and handled booking any of our guided tours, reservations, etc. for us. It was extremely helpful to have the personal recommendations. The perfect place for honeymooners- quiet, peaceful and beautiful!

We stayed here for 3 nights at the start of a long tour of Oz and can honestly say it was fantastic. John and Pam go to great lengths to make one's stay a brilliant experience. The bedroom was beautifully presented with a huge, incredibly comfy, netted bed, massive walk in wardrobe and excellent shower and bath.
Breakfasts were a delicious tropical feast, served on the verandah overlooking the lovely garden and mountain. The actual house is gorgeous, a lovely rural retreat. The birds singing and the country atmosphere enhanced our stay. We absolutely loved it and would have liked to have stayed much longer. A real treat which we would recommend to anyone.

Pam & John are perfect hosts and seem to relish the interaction with guests as they open their home such that you feel as if its almost yours. They are a wealth of knowledge about the area, attractions and tour options.

We stayed in the "downstairs" room that seems a little more private as it is offset from the main house. A small plunge pool is only steps away.

Breakfast is a combination of staples such a juice, fruit, granola, yogurt and bread/jam along with a different cooked dish (eggs, crepes etc). You won't go away hungry and you will be able to enjoy it with the finches that are fed along with you each morning.

The B & B is located a good distance from the Cook Highway so road noise is not an issue (but you may hear some of the equipment that is used to cut sugar cane in the nearby fields if you are there at the right time of year). More likely you will hear the birds, frogs and other creatures of the night before you hear anything mechanical.

Note that although the TripAdvisor listing has Marae B & B located in Port Douglas, it's actually located closer to Mossman and will be about a 12-15 minute drive into Pt Douglas. We found this refreshing as we could be away from the hub-bub of the Port Douglas area when we retired for the night but we were close enough to enjoy much of what Port Douglas had to offer with convenience.

During our stay, we planned many many excursions that started early in the AM and Pam was more than willing to adjust her schedule to be sure that we had a warm meal before we left for the day. She even went so far as to have a snack bag of fruit, yogurt, juice and muffins waiting outside our room when we left for the airport at 4AM.

If you are looking for a more homey alternative to the resort type accommodations found throughout Port Douglas, run (don’t walk) to Marae B & B.

The website for Marae maybe doesn't do this place and the owners justice. I can definitley second all the good things written below about the overall look and feel of the room, the great plunge pool, the excellent breakfasts (perfect before heading off for a day of diving from port douglas) and the greeting from John and Pam. They really were tremendously amiable and made us feel welcome in a genuine and as yet unmatched way. They were both very good hosts and we highly enjoyed our time with them. Marae was an excellent base from which to do stuff in FNQ. We drove the ten mins to Port to dive two days and drove to Cape Trib (1 hr) to spend a few days there. They arranged some diving for us on our second day as we had only booked one day initially. While the second day was good, we preferred the dive company on the first day for many reasons and can reccomend going with quicksilver (NOT to the quicksilver platform however!)

John and Pam deserve all the praise heaped on them for the general feel of the place and the ease with which they make you feel at home.

We have no doubts that we would stay there again.
