Loved the 1.5 hour personalised walking tour to the Mossman River and back, hearing about the food sources, the forest plants and Yalangi beliefs but the highlights were the smoking ceremony before the walk and Bama playing the various didgeredoos while damper was served.

This is a short guided hike that isn't challenging and honestly doesn't teach you too much about the rainforest or the Kuku Yalanji people. At least Australia lets the KuKu Yalanji have protected land and run an excellent center than what the USA gives to it's native people...

We did the Dreamtime walking tour, which was basically a short guided hike through the rainforest with special displays illustrating how the original inhabitants lived there and what they believed. Our original guide seemed as if she had learned a tour to give us but that she wasn't really "of" the culture she was explaining -- and I was somewhat disappointed. But at the end of the tour there was a place to have some tea and there happened to be another guide there, and he seemed to have grown up in the culture, could explain a lot more and had what seemed to be more genuine knowledge. So it might be worth making sure you have an experienced guide.

My sister's family did a more extended, all-day experience with a native guide. They went to the beach and went crabbing and spent more time with the guide. The kids (17 and 13) really enjoyed that.

This was included with our stay at Silky Oaks Lodge and im really glad it was. It was a great morning, we did an easy trek to the beautiful Mossman Gorge and back. Matty our guide was really informative and very friendly. Just beware of the friendly aboriginal spirit (kinda a boy spirit like the norse myth of loki) i think he lost all my photos cause i lost all the ones from the dream time walk but none before the walk or after the walk so its a bit suss. But im not too bothered from it cause i have excellent memories.

Had a great time, learnt a lot of really interesting things and developed a creater appreciation of the aboriginal community and the surrounding environment, and we even were spoilt with a delicious damper and daintree tea, and a performance by robby on the didgeridoo (was really good).

We took the one and a half hour Dreamtime Gorge tour and found it very interesting. The tour took us on a short bus ride from the excellent new visitor centre up to a special area of the gorge which is not open to the general public. Here we experienced a short "smoking ceremony" before our guide "Matty" led us on foot up into the rainforest.

We stopped regularly to hear about what life was like for the original inhabitants of the area, before European settlement. Topics included shelter, food, hunting, weapons and some aspects of clan life.

There was an opportunity for a swim in the crystal clear (but cold) mountain stream before we headed back down to the trackhead for billy tea, damper and a great didjeridoo demonstration and talk.

We all enjoyed the tour. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgable, and the content of the tour was diverse and interesting.

After the tour we had time to visit the lower parts of the gorge where there is a small network of excellent tracks.

The visitor centre has only recently opened, but is well organised and efficient. (Good coffee too!)
