“Great Place for a Relaxing Holiday”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

We stayed 5 nights and had a fantastic time. Mission Beach is a quiet part of FNQ but there's plenty to do there and great variety of activities too. It's a great alternative to the Cairns region or Port Douglas. Taihou Apartments are clean, modern and well presented and have everything that you might need. The hosts are friendly and helpful. We could not recommend this place too highly.

Room Tip: We followed other's advice and stayed in Unit 1. I think any of the lower units would be good wi...

Very clean, modern apartment with the BEST view to the islands and literally a walk across the road to the beach. Quiet and romantic with great spots to sip a nice wine in good company with sensational view- relaxing.

Encouraged by Tripadvisor reviews we treated ourselves to a 2 night stopover driving Townsville to Cairns, staying in their 2 bedroom Unit Lovely as stated? Sure, but there are one or two things which might be worth a mention too.
Mission Beach South is a residential area about 10k from Mission Beach, so it’s driving to restaurants and shops. The house fronts the beach just a step across a small access road, very quiet and private, beach chairs and bikes provided. The owners occupy the top floor and three one bedroom units below face the pool area and the view. The fourth larger unit is behind accessed from the pathway at the side of the house. It is quite dark.
The interior layout of the units is motel style. But make no mistake these are finished, furnished and maintained to a very high standard and no corners cut. The kitchenette is compact, fine for brekkie and snacks but not really set up for anything much more serious - no storage for dry goods, even if you do feel the urge! Of course there is always the shared barbie by the pool.
The units are fitted with wooden louvres, great for air flow but we had a problem. Louvres always leak light and in our second bedroom even the wood stopped about 18” from the top. This was just right to let the security lights which were on until midnight (when I took a sleeping pill) shine right in with no curtain to screen. I’m not sure that a promise to try to adjust the time clock was sucessful.
Our only outside seating was two chairs and a small round table on the access pathway, not very inviting and not private. Given the image promoted, the cost and that this unit accommodates four people this was a disappointment. Sure we could, and did, take a drink onto the pool area and the beach is right there, but it’s not quite the same. The one bedroomers are much better served so four people, if they could afford it, would do better in two of those.
Taihoa has a great deal going for it, well praised by other reviews and it would be really unfair to say we didn’t enjoy our perhaps too short stay here, we certainly did. Maybe these things don’t matter a jot, but in the context of an exclusive retreat in a lovely area, expectations are high and sometimes a word to the wise...... ?

Room Tip: 1,2, 3 front the beach. 2bed 4 spacious but dark, no outside area

Dear Lin S,

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review of Taihoa Holiday Units on Trip Advisor - we appreciate your feedback. Thank you also for your positive comments.

My apologies for the disrupted sleep caused by the light through the glass louvers at the top of each window - while they were put there to allow in additional daylight I can appreciate how they also allow in the building light in the evenings.

The lighting around the property is there to ensure guest comfort and safety when they arrive back from an evening dining out or a day's sight-seeing. These lights are on a timer and have been set to turn off at 11pm each night. While I am aware of your request to have these lights turn off earlier, we had to also consider our other guests that same night that had evening engagements.

Our kitchenette for Unit 4 has a two burner electric stovetop, microwave and electric frying pan as well as a selection of pots, pans, crockery and cutlery suited for up to 4 adults (as can be accommodated in that particular unit). We are very fortunate in Mission Beach as we also have a wide range of excellent eateries that serve breakfast, lunch & dinner.

I understand that you may have found the outdoor setting directly from your room too small for your needs, however as you have mentioned just a few metres away we do provide quite a large outdoor area with a range of seating options around the pool that is there for all of our guests to enjoy.

I acknowledge that for a single or couple traveling, the ocean view units are certainly better situated for views and outdoor comfort then our larger Unit 4. However, Unit 4, being larger (and available at a lesser cost due to it's location in the building) does provide options for our guests.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Kindest regards,
Tracey & James (Owners/Managers)

My husband and I were very fortunate to spend 12 idyllic days at beautiful South Mission Beach. We initially booked for only 4 nights at Taihoa Holiday Units, with the intention of getting a feel for the area and finding where an ideal base would be. Within half an hour of checking in to our perfectly appointed unit with AMAZING sea views; and meeting the charming owner Tracey, we were asking to extend our stay for the remaining 7 nights! Very luckily for us, they were able to accommodate us for the rest of our stay. The unit had absolutely everything we needed while on holiday and was spotlessly clean, airy, immaculately presented & spacious. We had an amazing, relaxing holiday and would return to stay at Taihoa in a heartbeat. Thank you Tracey & James for all your helpful advice, local knowledge and just for being the perfect hosts!

Rooms are spacious and easily one of the best accommodations in Mission Beach. The owners are very personable and are available on site for any concerns or queries. We are Cairns locals and have stayed there twice in the last two years for weddings at Elandra. The price is exceptional for the quality and service! Highly recommend for value for money and service!

Room Tip: The Spa rooms has a large double spa bath which was fantastic!

Hi Globetrottercairns,
Thanks very much for taking the time to write a review and for your positive feedback about Taihoa Holiday Units. We always feel a repeat visit is a compliment and it's always nice to see our guests return. Unit 1 is a lovely unit with views to the ocean and the islands beyond, a larger TV (then the standard rooms) and a big comfy king size bed. The larger corner tub in the ensuite is not a spa tub (unfortunately) - although if you remember to bring the bubbles, it makes for a very romantic bubble bath for two!
Thanks again Globetrottercairns - hope to see you again in the future.
Kindest regards,
Tracey

My Wife and I stayed in Taihoa Beachfront units for a week whilst we were visiting Mission Beach... absolutely amazing. It is in the quite part of Mission Beach South, away from it all with views unlike anything we've seen around the world. Most of the time we were the only ones on the beach...

Units themselves are well equip with everything you need on holiday, even if you find something missing Tracey and James the owners who live upstairs are always available to help.

Highly recommend a car if staying here, simply not possible without one. Closest shops is 10 minute drive to Mission Beach north. This place also has Wifi, just ask. James even lent us his Freezer because we bought to much food!! Thank you James.

There are excellent laundry facilities, nice pool and BBQ area.

Oh yes, and watch out for the Wallaby's they are everywhere!! Cute little things.

Room Tip: Definitely choose the ocean view room, no matter the cost - it is stunning
