My husband and I spent 2 nights in one of the luxury tents and although the first night i was very nervous about the possibility of sharing the accommodatoin with a variety of creepy crawlies, this fear turned out to be unfounded and the second night I was far more relaxed!

We really enjoyed the novelty of cooking for ourselves on the BBQ on the deck and were amused by the interested visitors in the shape of an emu family at breakfast time.

Sundown overlooking the lagoon fom the visitor centre is incredible and we took a bottle of wine along to enjoy the view.

The accommodation was surprisingly comfortable for something that looks relatively temporary and the warm welcome and hospitality by Liz and Neil was appreciated.

We opted for the 5 day Reef, Rainforest and out back experience which included 2 nights at Jabiru in a deluxe tent. We were picked up from our accommodation in Cairns and driven about 1 1/2 hours to the lodge. The scenery changes dramatically when you reach the table lands going from lush rain forest to very dry conditions, very much the "outback". There is not much that Liz and Neil do not know about the 5000 acre reserve. Our tent was wonderful and had everything we needed. Their commitment to the environment is demonstrated throughout, down to the bio-degradable shampoo. The sunset safari was great and we spotted amazing bird and wildlife. The morning bird watching safari was also amazing guided by a bird specialist, while it was raining we still spotted over 30 species of birds. Overall our experience was much better than we expected. We highly recommend the 5 day experience if your time is limited in the Cairns area.

I stayed here with my mother who on first seeing the 'raised canvas tent' baulked at the idea of spending a night, but I chose to ignore her and proceeded with check-in and settling in. She came round very quickly - ooohhing and ahhing about how lovely the place was and what fun.
Our 'raised canvas tent' - one of 2 eco tents - had 3 comfortable single beds in the main section and a bathroom on the other side of a canvas wall. At the front was a balcony area with BBQ and table and chairs.
We watched the sunset over the lake at the reception area, enjoying a glass of wine as we did so. Then we retreated to our accom and cooked up the BBQ pack purchased for $25 (not being very hungry we had bought just one and it was more than enough for two of us - we could not eat all the salads which was a shame as they were very tasty). Over dinner we enjoyed the sights and sounds of the bush and starry sky at night.
After an extremely comfortable sleep we were up early to walk through the bush to the main lagoon to see the brolgas and many other birds at first light (well, not that early). To watch the hundreds of brolgas starting their day and then finally taking off is a sight not to be missed while there. The bushwalk itself most enjoyable. There are other walks to be done on this huge property and I would have liked a longer stay to explore them all, but we'd only allowed ourselves a night.. this time.
The continental breakfast in our room/ fridge was more than adequate - toast; cereals; fruit; yoghurts; juice and filtered coffee.
Through wotif.com we paid $130 for all this (dinner and wine not included) - definitly worth it.

What can I say, nice clean tent-comfy beds and great showers. Nice BBQ pack to self cook.Great guide 'chookie'--made our stay!. Wonderful wild life.-emus walking around the tents....great sky and night stars.
Its a shame the deluxe tents are not situated overlooking the water.
we may return.....( only 1 snake spotted, thx)

Only spent one night in a deluxe cabin but really enjoyed this retreat. The reserve is lovely and tranquil, in a great wetland setting. Though there were not too many wetland birds around at the time of year we went, we still saw lots of other interesting creatures - parrots, emus, frogs and a really tame bowerbird in the visitor centre which tried to mug my husband for his shoelace to put in his bower! The termite mounds brought added interest. I imagine that kids would love exploring the place.

Went on a guided birding trip with one of the hosts that was definately worthwhile - he made a big effort to track down birds we hadn't seen elsewhere on the holiday, and we got a checklist of all we'd seen.

The canvas cabin was comfortable and fun, and zipped up well enough to keep most of the insects out, though my husband did get a few mosquito bites (mosquito coils were provided for eating outside). There was an ensuite toilet, sink and shower, which were clean.

We did have a hire car which we weren't supposed to take down dirt tracks but the 7km track to the site was driveable so shouldn't pose too much of a risk.

We recently stayed at the Jabaru Safari Lodge for the night on May 25th at a rate of AUD 392 for 1 night for a "Deluxe Safari Cabin". Although the price seemed high, we decided to splurge since it offered us the chance to stay on an Australian Nature Reserve and also included dinner, breakfast and a boat/jeep safari.

We could not have been happier with our stay and felt it was worth every penny! Here are the highlights:

1. Jabaru's setting in an Australian "savannah" was spectacularly picturesque, and was similar to a majestic South African landscape such as Kruger National Park. There were 3 friendly and very large emus which had free range of the Reserve's grounds. While we were on the porch of our tent enjoying the afternoon sun, they walked right up to our porch to check us out.
2. Chook, Jabaru's affable safari guide, made the lagoons come alive as he took us in a boat to see a variety of rare birds and native plants. After the boat excursion, he took us in a jeep to explore the Reserve for a fascinating land safari where we encountered wild kangaroos, giant termite mounds and wild horses. He was also a keen botanist and we were shown unusual local plants such as "soap tree" leaves that when crushed with water could be used for soap as well as a "bloodwood" tree whose sap could be used as an antiseptic.
3. The Lodge Manager, Tracey, was friendly and efficient. After the safari, she kindly served us a complimentary round of wine with 4 cheeses and crackers which we enjoyed on the deck of the main Lodge as we watched the sun set over the lagoon.
4. Our safari tent was rustic but perfect. The fridge was pre-stocked with our choice of dinner so all we had to do was turn on the grill on our private front porch and cook the shrimp skewers and the fish fillets that Tracey had placed in the fridge for us along with several cold salads. We thought it was fun to shower "outside" in our tent's open-air yet private shower and bathroom. In the morning, we enjoyed tea and coffee on the front porch of our tent along with a diverse breakfast which had been placed out for us.

I can't stress enough what a fun time we had there and our stay at the Jabaru Safari Lodge was definitely the highlight of our trip to Australia!

The mareeba wetlands are fantastic. The relaxed atmosphere and wonderful outlook makes this a fantastic experience. The sunset tour, where you spot the birds on the boat trip, then Billy tea followed by wine, cheese and the sunset make this a fantastic part of your stay. The safari tents are fully furnished,(no tv of course) and have even coffee and tea facilities and even an en suite with hot running water. The tent has it's own BBQ which is handy to cook dinner or even fry something up in the morning for Breakfast. A great stay at a fantastic location, with fantastic hosts. Thanks Tracey and Chooka for all your wealth of knowledge.
