Description: Deliciously different African, Mediterranean and Caribbean traditional family style cooking is served at the Key Restaurant Maleny, a short 20 minute drive from the Sunshine Coast. Some of the most popular dishes on the menu are Mozambique Chicken with Jollof Rice, the melt in your mouth Moroccan Lamb Tagine, the hot and spicy West Indies Goat Curry. All of the dishes are lovingly prepared by Ghanaian Chef and Owner, Simone Butler, with many involving very lengthy traditional preparation and slow cooking to perfection, often over 3 days. In addition to Simone's traditional ethnic dishes, there is also available fantastic 30 mm thick 350 gram plus grass fed, well marbelled steaks or fresh grilled barramundi. Key Restaurant Maleny is fully licensed with a cocktail bar, an interesting wine cellar with lots of variety to match the sometimes spicy and fragrant dishes. Excellent organic coffee, delicious cakes and deserts are a feature. Enjoy dining by the log fire or alfresco dining on the spacious veranda with panoramic views to the Coast, Mount Coolum, the hinterland and the Glasshouse Mountains. For mouth-watering meals, packed full of flavour and exotic spices, visit the Key Restaurant in Maleny. Open Wed – Sunday, lunch and dinner, Special Friday Night Buffet. “Overpriced, lacklustre service, and boring dishes? Not here! Highly recommend.”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

Came across this place via a flyer at our accommodation, and went up for Sunday lunch. The staff were 5 star dining professional yet also down to earth, friendly and helpful - making recommendations & suggestions and explaining the dishes. We had the plantain starter - such an interesting and delicious flavour. I also liked that the staff explained the dish and how best to enjoy it. My partner had the Goat curry which he loved, such tender meat and the sauce - they weren't kidding about the spiciness so if that's your thing you will enjoy. He's not a fan of flavoured beer but at our waiters suggestion he had the mango beer and it went with it very nicely. I had the Baby lobster - also aptly described in the menu - messy! I was a little worried about using my fingers with the sauce but the staff were so encouraging and seemingly came out of nowhere with more napkins as needed. And the dish was delicious. Was Nice relaxed atmosphere out on their deck. We previously had gone to the usual 'Modern Australian' restaurant for dinner the night before and the service & experience paled in comparison to Key. I highly recommend.

“Happy Birthday!”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

I booked a table at this restaurant for my mother's 77th birthday. From the moment we arrived and were greeted with a smile, my mum was made to feel like royalty. The restaurant is situated on an elevated block of land on the corner of the main road into Maleny and the turn off to Mary Cairncross Park and lookout. There is plenty of parking in the car park and the restaurant has wonderful views into the surrounding valleys or of the nearer treetops.

We initially sat on the spacious verandah to enjoy an al fresco lunch - however as the weather had turned cool, and mum was feeling cold - staff very quickly relocated us to the airy, and equally spacious interior. The restaurant has a bar, lounge area and fireplace for winter. While we slowly read through our menu options, we enjoyed 'Mocktails'. Mine a mango dacquari 'and mums a strawberry dacquari, served in tall glasses. We were also served cold water, which was frequently topped up during our meal.

We ordered starters - a platter of Turkish bread, a tomato dip and a hummus dip, and a small dish of olives, fetta cheese and sundried tomatoes in a spicy marinade. All tasty, however we both agreed the tomato dip was the best we've ever had! We then shared a cheese platter with a choice of blue vein, gouda, a rich, creamy camembert and a delicious hard cheese, served with crusty bread and a sweet condiment.

For mains - Mum had pan-fried barramundi fillets with chips and salad, and I enjoyed Mozambique chicken - marinated, char grilled & basted chicken with a lime & paprika, spice base and mild chilli flavours, served with Jollof rice - a traditional West African accompaniment. Both dishes were excellent and Mum couldn't believe how fresh and tasty her fish was. I found my chicken dish to be the perfect level of spicy flavour. When I ordered I simply asked what mum would prefer, and then added in the starters which contained her favourites - I didn't care if it wasn't all eaten. That was fortunate, because I also didn't know that the portion sizes served at this restaurant, are large. However, we enjoyed the food so much, we managed to put away a fair amount - even mum who normally eats like a bird.

We decided to finish with a cup of tea, and were surprised by a visit from the owner - who presented us with an espresso flavoured, liqueur aperitif as a birthday present to mum. She was delighted! The english breakfast tea was accompanied by dainty, sweet pastries. Mum declared this to be the best birthday ever.

The restaurant is situated close to Maleny, has wonderful views, is spacious and airy, with great ambience, serves delectable 'Tastes of Africa', has excellent staff, and provides impeccable service. If you're in the area, or in the mood for a country drive and a delicious meal OR simply want somewhere to create a special memory - I heartily recommend the Key restaurant.

Hi Faye766, thanks for your wonderful and detailed review. I remember your visit very well and it was a real pleasure for us to see how much you and your Mum enjoyed her birthday. She polished off our African Expresso Martini with a big smile indeed. We look forward to seeing you, your Mum and some more of your friends and family with us again soon.

“Don't pass this one up!”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

Tripadvisor guided us to this place, it being #1 of 27 possible choices on the site when we inputted Maleny. And Tripadvisor did not let us down. The goat curry wasn't bad, but the Jamaican Jerk Chicken and the Spicy soup were amazing. Even if you don't normally order chicken at a restaurant I would strongly recommend it, I've never had anything like it. The soup wasn't as hot as they made out but maybe I'm tough :-) Tasted great. In terms of the decor and ambience - can't fault it. Service was friendly and fine. And the chef came out to see how everything was - a rarity. Good work everyone!

“Brilliant”
Reviewed October 3, 2013 via mobile

We went to the key for dinner to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary, after being Married here four years previously. We were interested to see how the restaurant had changed, since becoming the 'tastes of Africa' theme.
We were not disappointed!! The waiter was very knowledgable about the menu, our meals were fantastic, and dessert an complimentary dessert for our anniversary was wonderful and a nice surprise. The chef came out to speak to us also which was lovely. Highly recommended and we will be back!

“Great for a different flavor for the tastebuds”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

The service couldn't be faulted and the food, was a selection of different delicacies. I had dinner with my mum here on a Thursday Night and the atmosphere is lovely and peaceful with great music and wonderful portraits of artwork. The food we really enjoyed was great for something a little bit different. The Waiter was very knowledge, obliging and hospitable.
