Description: Deliciously different African, Mediterranean and Caribbean traditional family style cooking is served at the Key Restaurant Maleny, a short 20 minute drive from the Sunshine Coast. Some of the most popular dishes on the menu are Mozambique Chicken with Jollof Rice, the melt in your mouth Moroccan Lamb Tagine, the hot and spicy West Indies Goat Curry. All of the dishes are lovingly prepared by Ghanaian Chef and Owner, Simone Butler, with many involving very lengthy traditional preparation and slow cooking to perfection, often over 3 days. In addition to Simone's traditional ethnic dishes, there is also available fantastic 30 mm thick 350 gram plus grass fed, well marbelled steaks or fresh grilled barramundi. Key Restaurant Maleny is fully licensed with a cocktail bar, an interesting wine cellar with lots of variety to match the sometimes spicy and fragrant dishes. Excellent organic coffee, delicious cakes and deserts are a feature. Enjoy dining by the log fire or alfresco dining on the spacious veranda with panoramic views to the Coast, Mount Coolum, the hinterland and the Glasshouse Mountains. For mouth-watering meals, packed full of flavour and exotic spices, visit the Key Restaurant in Maleny. Open Wed – Sunday, lunch and dinner, Special Friday Night Buffet. “Very satisfied customers!!”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

My partner and I came up to Maleny to celebrate my birthday. On our last night we decided to try the Key. We hadn't tried African food before so were not too sure what to expect. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with warm, genuine hospitality. It was a great start to a great evening!

We loved that the food was different to anything we had tried. We started with the chicken and beef kebabs, the satay on the chicken kebabs was smooth and delicious, the beef spicy and flavoursome. We were then made some refreshing cocktails by the lovely owner. Very yummy!!
We were excited to taste our mains as everything had been fantastic so far. We weren't disappointed!!!! My partner ordered the goat curry which had amazing flavours with a real spicy punch at the end, and I ordered the baby lobster which had been cooked in an aromatic spicy sauce. Our meals were cooked perfectly and were a generous serving so we were very full after an entree and main but we decided to squeeze in dessert as well. The desserts were absolutely to die for! The pannacotta with raspberry was fresh and light, and my partners sticky date was amazing!!!

We could not fault the food or the amazing service. Our waiter and the owner were both attentive, interesting, and most importantly genuine, and we enjoyed having the opportunity to chat with the owner throughout the night and really appreciated his attention to detail and his interesting stories and knowledge about aspects of African food and culture and drinks. A fantastic host!

We would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone and can't wait to come back and try more dishes. Thank you once again for an amazing experience!!!

“Very Disappointed”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

Chose this place for my 50th yesterday after reading the reviews and thinking it might be good for such an occasion. It would have to be one the worst eating experiences I’ve ever had. Firstly they forgot half of our drinks order, and then it was an hour and a half before mains arrived and they were all staggered and the guest of honours meal arriving last of all, “other guest in the party had finished their meals by then. I had the signature dish; "the Lobster" which they said would be worth the wait! It was like chewing on a rubber thong but with less flavour! The prices were also exorbitant, $9 for a glass of soft drink! Overall experience was very disappointing and i will not be returning.

Hi 123David,

First and foremost please accept our apologies for your disappointment. We try to go a long way out of our way to ensure that each and every guest is well looked after and happy. I'll give you a call and be in touch shortly. Having looked into your situation I note as follows: you had a booking for 12 people for your birthday at midday on Sunday. You and some of your party arrived at midday, some of your guests took a while to arrive and 2 guests were "no shows". We provided water in caraffes with some ice and fresh lime in it for everyone along with menus on arrival. In the first pass of drinks you and one of your young guests ordered 2 x Ginger Fizz which have been very popular and which you both seemed to enjoy at the time. The Ginger Fizz drinks are non-alcoholic cocktails based on brewed Ginger Beer, mixed with a hefty dash of fresh lime that has been "muddled", fresh mint and served over ice. They are not soft drinks and are clearly labelled and priced in the drinks list as such. The rest of your drinks did come out in two lots, and as we were busy there was indeed a few minutes (not more than 5) gap between when the first drinks arrived including the beers and the glasses of bubbles and wine arrived. We waited until all of your guests had arrived (ie 10 put of the 12 booked) before taking orders and this took sometime about 20 minutes. You will recall that some of your guests ordered entrees - a Pumkin Soup, a Turkish Bread with Dip, Beef Kebabs and 3 x Satay Chicken Kebabs. There were 6 out of 10 of your guests who had entrees. Our records indicate these 6 entrees arrived within 15 minutes of being ordered. We allowed the usual amount of time for your guests who had entrees to finish them with main courses following the entrees within 40 minutes of the arrival of the entrees. I personally sent the 2 X African Style BBQ Lobster out to you and know they arrived within 10 minutes of the other main courses. As you have noted in your comments, and from our menu, the Lobsters do take a little longer. I am very sorry you did not enjoy them. The BBQ process does make them firmer than simply boiled, and for us it is all about the flavours, which this method of cooking, along with the unique spice mix from the Comoros Islands (North of Madagascar) with cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, etc and the smoky BBQ taste enhanced by basting with butter, garlic and parsley provides. You had mentioned at the time to our Maitre D' Paul that you found the BBQ Lobster quote "a bit tough". You and your guest both finished the Lobsters completely. When it came time for desserts, Paul proposed 2 complimentary desserts for you and your guest which you were pleased to hear about and ordered accordingly 2 complimentary Sticky Date Puddings served with Caramel Sauce, Whipped Cream and Ice-Cream. We were also happy not to charge for serving your birthday cake. When you paid the bill you were asked if everything was OK and it seemed to us that it was. Obviously you have gone home and thought more about it and hence your review. Again, we are sorry you were disappointed and shall call you shortly.
