My partner and I needed to get away for some long-awaited together time, and happened upon the perfect place in the form of Maleny Tropical Retreat. Although there are B and B rooms and large open-plan villas available here, we chose the self-contained "Tuban" cabin as a happy medium between luxury and affordability. While the Tuban cabin has all the seclusion a romantically-inclined couple could wish for, and luxuries such as spa, wood fire, TV/DVD and a very comfy queen bed, it also has a kitchenette (fry-pan, microwave, toaster, kettle) and a generous-sized fridge which allowed us to remain as self-contained as we wished during our four-night stay. Money saved on food meant more to spend on treats and luxuries in the Hinterland, of which there are many - the Flame Hill and Maleny Mountain wineries, Kenilworth Country Foods, spectacular drives throughout the Blackall Ranges... the list goes on.
However, simply relaxing on-site was also an extremely attractive option at Maleny Tropical Retreat. The cabin was set off the internal road and sheltered by well-established trees, and with a lovely wood fire going and DVDs from the Retreat's huge collection, there was every temptation just to stay put, sip wine and luxuriate like a king and queen. And if we wanted some activity, but didn't feel like driving, the Retreat's private frontage onto the crystal-clear rushing waters of the Obi-Obi Creek beckoned. It's truly a special feeling to find yourself alone in such a beautiful natural setting, to recline on a sunny patch of rock and realise that you aren't going to be disturbed by cars or walkers - nothing but birdsong, the roar of the creek and each other's company.
As for service, we found it to be exemplary. Ken, the proprietor, is one of those rare human beings with an easy gift for making people feel at home. We were carefully yet unintrusively looked after as if we were life-long friends. This special atmosphere extended to the breakfast table, where friendly conversations with other guests seemed to flow effortlessly. The food was fresh and carefully-prepared, and the fruit was exceptional - an obvious level of care taken in the choosing of superb-quality seasonal delights. Ken went out of his way to point out good local restaurants and attractions, and made sure we were aware of every detail which could make our stay more enjoyable. But if we wanted to simply retreat, nothing was pushed or hurried.
We could have stayed another week and barely noticed the passing of time. I'd recommend this little slice of Hinterland Heaven to any couple without hesitation. The beauty and friendliness which surrounds you works its way into your heart while you're there, recharging the most exhausted batteries and renewing romance for lovebirds of any age.

The peace and quiet, the privacy and supurb views, the spectacular king size 2 person spa and a very comfortable king size bed, a wall mounted wide-screen 3D TV, DVD player with a library of dvd's to choose from and a stereo/cd player, full bathroom facilities and kitchen together with the free standing wood fire, huge private balcony and attached carport of the Candi Dasa Villa, the chirping birds, kookaburras and the friendly cattle made this an outstanding destination for a mid year break. Although we made our own breakfast on a few occassions, the accomodation came with a yummy breakfast thrown in each morning for the 6 night stay which made this journey south truly breathtaking. The hospitality shown by Ken and Dawn, Benji and Cassie was outstanding, they couldn't have done a better job. A welcomed rest enjoyed by us both, therefore truly priceless. We will return!!!!!

Amazing views- definitely.
Privacy- maybe.
Can hear every footstep in the one large wooden house- cabins look better in that regard. The lack of a door on the toilet may take relationships to new levels of intimacy- not quite what I'm into!
Has great potential, though needs a few tweaks I think.

My partner and I had the pleasure of staying at one of the excellently appointed villas during the Queens' Birthday long weekend. We stayed at the Candi Dasa Villa that overlooks a beautiful valley with the Baroone Dam in the background. We stayed for two nights and enjoyed our included breakfasts, the relaxing environment and the ability to enjoy the time away from our hectic lifestyles. We also enjoyed visiting the local towns of Maleny and Montville.

We stayed 2 nights at Maleny Tropical resort and had a very wonderful time staying at the beautiful maleny retreat. As soon as we arrived, we were welcomed by one of the dogs Benji and he was barking excitedly to let Ken (our host) know that we're there! Ken is a great cook and we were pampered with eggs benedict, bacon with eggs and sweet berry pancakes in the morning. The room is spacious, very cosy with spa bath and a romantic natural fireplace. We also went down to the Obi Obi creek with the company of Benji and Cassie (his mum) and the dogs are soo cute...they are always so excited when they see anyone walking down the creek and can't wait to lead them to the Obi Obi's wonders. We had such a relaxing time getting away from the chaos and busy lifestyle from the city (Brisbane) and it's like a paradise overlooking the mountains with waterfalls of the Obi Obi creek just at the bottom of the Tropical Retreat. Local restaurants are only a few minutes away. Thank you Ken :)

PS - We fell in love with a picture featuring a pair of Twany Frogmouth on one of Ken's brochures and we rang Ken up the next day asking whether he could do us a favour and whethr it'd be possible to scan it for us. He went to town the next day just to scan the picture to email to us. He is such a nice guy and a great host and cook!! Highly recommended!!

Room Tip: For couples I will recommend the secluded and romantic Lovina room!!

My husband and I agree that the 4 nights we spent here were among the most relaxing times of our lives! Our room was perfectly appointed (comfortable bed, lush towels and a fabulous double spa, among other things), with sublime views. The breakfasts cooked by Ken were simply delicious and we found him and the other staff to be most obliging. We enjoyed being accompanied on walks down to the creek by the dogs - Benji and Cassie. The accomodation is in an ideal location for those who want some peace and quiet, yet enjoy short pictureque drives (approx 10 mins) to local cafes and book shops. We can't recommend this place enough. Thanks Ken and Dawn! T and C

We escaped up to the mountains for our 'anniversary night' to celebrate 7 wonderful years together. The incredible room was private, spacious and divine with a vast selection of movies and CD's to peruse. Our fabulous hostess, Dawn, knew all the delicious restaurants close by and also mentioned that the Montville Bar and Grill would send a complimentary bus to pick us up and deliver us back! Done. We had time to go for a leisurely walk down to the Obi Obi creek and escorted by the 'happy body guards' (their 2 lovely dogs). My partner (he is European!) had a refreshing swim in the gorgeous, scenic, waterhole. We then had time for a warm bubbly spa, some champagne and at 7.30, the mini bus arrived outside, as organised. We were whisked away for a night of fun, amazing music, excellent meals and even some 'dancing on the deck'. Next morning, we had a fabulous home cooked feast, but then sadly, retreated back down the hill to our frantic life of work (nurses at the Nambour Hospital), our family of teenagers, and dull, usual routines.
An amazing experience that was refreshing, bonding, fun, enjoyable, we were so incredibly well looked after, and we shall return.
