Owner description: The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is a spectacular journey comprising unsurpassed views of World Heritage Listed rainforest, steep ravines and picuresque waterfalls within the Barron Gorge National Park. This famous railway winds its way from Cairns to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest. Constructed between 1882 and 1891 it is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. Hundreds of men were employed to build the 15 hand-made tunnels and 37 bridges that stand as a monument to the pioneers of tropical North Queensland

My first impression was that this was a tourist trap, but I was totally wrong. I loved the scenery and good commentary about the history of the area. There was a stop along the way to get out and take photos. I think the total trip was about 45 minutes. Worth the time and money.

Enjoyed riding the train. It moved at a comfortable pace, yet the total trip was a bit long. Nice views of waterfalls and valley.

I have done dozens of trips on the Kuranda railway and this time I had the opportunity to take my 11 year old daughter on her first trip up the winding track. We both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as I expected. Bit pricey for what it is, bust a must see in Cairns.

One of our days in Port Douglas we decided to visit the town of Kuranda. We parked our car at the sky rail and then caught this up to the town. This was by far the best part of our trip the views from the sky rail are magnificent, you get two stops where you can get out and have a wander around and check out some more views. When we got to the town we had a look around the market stalls there. You probably only need about an hour or two there. Then we caught the train back. We had seats booked that had all 4 of us on one bench row and luckily for us the row in front of us was not occupied so we were able to sit 2 opposite each other and therefore had 2 next to the window. If it had been full then 3 of us would harldly have been able to see anything as on one side of the trip it is mainly mountain views and the other when there is a break in the rainforrest you get the odd amazing view. Also luckily for us it wasn't a particually hot day so the carriage wasn't too bad, but on a hot day if it was full it would be unbearable, there is no air conditioning. When we reached the station, we were then picked up by a shuttle bus that took us back to the skyrail to collect our car.

My family and I had a wonderful day by taking the Kuranda Scenic Rail up to the village. Upon arriving at a beautiful station we made our way up to the village of Kuranda. What a lovely community. The markets were of good quality and interesting. You could taste some mango wine at one of the shops .... very nice. We had lunch at the pub near the railway station. The service there was great, the people very friendly and the food good! To get back we took the skyway gondola down... stopping at all the stations on the way back. It is fantstic to see that the skyway has been built with the rainforest being the primary concern. It has not damaged the environment at all and is spectacular! Well worth spending to day this way.
