We stayed in Cassowary House during July 2012, in the bush shack. The accommodation was of the standard that we expected. Not flash, but we were there to see the Cassowaries!!

And we did!

We were quite close to a couple of Cassowaries, and I do mean couple!

My partner and I love nature and rain forests, so this suited us.

This may not suit everyone, but we got more than we expected.

A surpisingly relaxing and special place to stay. So close to Cairns and yet feels so far away, up the winding mountain road, and just a 5 minute drive to Kuranda, it feels like you are in the middle of rainforest. The breakfast here is a real highlight, more fresh fruit and freshly baked (and beautiful tasting) bread and muffins than most can handle! The birds and wildlife are on the doorstep, almost in the house, and occasionally there is a Cassowary in a room! The rooms were comfortable and clean, with most things you could want on hand. The local bird and wildlife knowledge is second to none, with Sue seemingly knowledgable of the location of all possible beasts and birds anyone could want. Even as a non-birder, I found it fascinating to see many of the birds easily seen here, including the famous Cassowary 'Missy', and the several different honeyeaters (I think this was what they were called!). With so much within driving distance and such an idyllic location, I can not recommend it highly enough! Would go back specifically to have breakfast on the balcony with the rainforest laid out within reach. Fantastic.

A great place to stay. Phil & Sue Gregory, who run the B&B as well as Sicklebill Safaris are very hospitable & welcoming. They have a vast knowledge of the birds, and can arrange tailormade tours for bird watching My husband & I engaged them for a 10 day private tour of Queensland, to search for endemic birds. We had a fabulous time and saw over 250 species.

Cassowary house is a delight - breakfast is served on the raised porch - and is fit for a king. Plenty of fresh fruit and homemade bread & muffins. You will not starve here - evening meals are substantial, tasty and good old fashioned home cooking.

The Cassowary visits most mornings, and we even managed to see a Duck-billed Platypus in the creek.

If you enjoy peace, wildlife & good food, you can't go wrong here. Birders will love it .

We stayed 2 nights here as a "belt and braces" approach to guarantee seeing cassowary at the end of a 11 night birding trip to Cairns, Daintree and the Atherton Tablelands area. It was a good job we did as we didn't see one anywhere else despite looking hard!!

Although the standard of accommodation hadn't been foremost in our minds when booking the 2 nights we found our room to be more than comfortable - not what could be described as luxurious but more than adequate and we both slept well.

Sue puts on a great breakfast spread on the terrace which affords spectacular views of a number of rain forest birds which come to the feeders including catbird and Victoria's riflebird.

This perhaps isn't the place to come if you're looking for luxury or a beach break but for birders its a must!

Cassowary house is a family-run guest house smack in the middle of the tropical rainforest just a half hour or so from Cairns, on the edge of the Atherton Tablelands. Phil and Sue Gregory have invited guests into their home for more than 12 years, catering mostly to birders and people who want to enjoy the outdoors. Their greatest claim to fame, however, may be that this is the best place in Australia to dependably see a wild Cassowary - the giant bird of the rainforest. I saw them every day during our stay - as well as a host of other native birds. Cassowary House makes is a great base for birding trips around the : many of the best of which are less than an hour away.

Sue sets a marvelous table on the veranda every morning, with homemade breads and fresh tropical fruits. For company, you are likely to have Riflebirds, Catbirds, and a host of Honeyeaters in the trees all around. She can also do a wonderful evening meal on request, which is helpful because there are few other restaurant options in nearby Kuranda.

The rooms are simple but clean, in a separate building from the main house. There is also a self-catering cottage right in the forest for those that would prefer to cook for themselves.

If you want to see the Australian rainforest and, in particular, Cassowaries : a few days here makes an excellent companion to a trip further north to Daintree.
