“Great Hostel”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

This hostel is situated in a great location. There are a lot of nice bays in the area. It's a 10 minute walk to the Horseshoe Bay which is a beautiful beach. It is a 25ish minute walk to some great hiking locations (a short bus ride if you want to pay the 90 cents). I hiked to the World War II forts. It was a nice hike with BEAUTIFUL views and took about an hour and a half. There is also another beautiful secluded beach by that area as well. The hostel itself was very clean and the bar had delicious drinks. During happy hour they were all $6. When I was there it wasn't too crowded so the night life wasn't too crazy but we had a few drinks and walked to the beach and it was nice. If you want a crazy time you can catch the bus to X base. The hostel had a nice camping area where some of my friends stayed and a nice kitchen supplied with cooking utensils. There were hammocks set up around the saltwater pool to relax in. The whole area was very beautiful. Overall I had a very enjoyable weekend!

Prior to deciding to stay on Maggie Island for 10 days during the winter high season, we considered many rental options. Prices ranged from $75 for an A frame back packers to $400 per night for a top of market villa.
We decided to opt of a totally different experience from our usual up market experiernce.... maybe a gamble, we were taking a risk. Or so we thought.
We read Koala Village reviews suggesting 50 were acceptable and 5 or 6 totally unacceptable.
Well, contrary to our possible concerns, we were introduced to a small on suite unit for $90 per night for a maximum stay of 7 nights. While from the outside, it didnt look overly exciting we soon discovered that this destination offered something quite unique and refreshing.
Horseshoe beach was exactly 6 minutes walk (we timed it). The bird life was extraordinary (the most prolific on the island). We were sheltered from the sun and 29 Deg temperatures by a wide variety of native trees that offered privacy. Not onces in 7 nights were we pestered with creapy crawlies mozzies or flies. We dined out side our unit at night and loved it. The staff, while very professional were not able to give 'on demand' attention because as we learned, this resort was experiencing high demand from young back packers arriving and leaving every day.
The facilities are award winning for its accommodation type, as we experienced for ourselves. Bungalow Bay Backpackers is not a Mom and Pop business but a very well managed and efficient specialist destination.
Bedding turned out to be great with crisp new sheets and towelling provided as required
The bar is casual, relaxed and inviting
To wrap up... if you want a beach based fun stay with a younger set this is the best on the island

Room Tip: If you want shared toilets and bathrooms, with other people take an A frame 8 person M or F unit If...

After weeks of shared bathrooms we decide to rent an ensuite bedroom for our staying in magnetic island.
Bad option, the room was in the parking area and in front of the bar (noise until 23.30).
Even if we rented the most expensive room (100$ per night) we definitely didin't get the best one, the other bungalow are nicer and better positioned.
If you are going to stay here definitely do not rent the ensuite.

We camped on a powered site for 4 nights, by far the best spot to stay in walking distance to shops, restaurants, pub, bus and beach on Magnetic Island.plenty of things to do and the bar area is great and facilities very clean and very hot showers, people friendly.

Room Tip: Can only comment on camping, not real level for powered sites but we managed

Loved being here so much that we arranged a 2nd trip! Both times we bought the maggie madness package, well worth it! The pizzas at the hostel are good (the first time we had one they had been made too salty which was fine as they repaid us in cocktails!), staff are friendly, and very close to the beach- only a short walk. We happened to be in the same room both times, the first time was fine but had quite a few ants on the walls and in the bathroom but the 2nd time a couple months later was much better, not an ant in sight and much cleaner. The hostel even has a really nice pool area with hammocks! Not much for entertainment purposes on an evening, the hostel hold events each night but they were never really busy, the bar closed no later than 11 which was fine as you could have a good nights sleep! Met some great people, definitely recommend Bungalow Bay to anyone!

Great family experience. Breakfast was fabulous - great outback feel. Staff professional, knowledgeable and friendly.Fantastic location and good variety of wildlife. Well worth the money and time.Only complaint - to much food and so much variety. Opportunity to pat and take photos with a crocodile, parrots, snake & lizards.

I stayed in a 3 bed bungalow with my two daughters. The rooms were basic, but clean. The camp kitchen had good facilities and was also clean and well maintained. The staff were very helpful. There is loads of wildlife - Possums, wallabies and curlews around the area, especially in the evening. There is a bus stop located right outside.
