Me and my girlfriend recently stayed here for two nights. Not the best hostil iv seen but nice enough. The food was really nice considering the backpackers diet we been on for the past month, the rooms had an amazing view(125) looking over the ocean, the staff seemed to enjoy themselfs, they were good. Kitchen though was a masave let down, nothing worked! Kawala sanctuary is a must see, the bargain of our trip defo

We were first put into a 8 bed cabin like thing, was vile and hot. The little huts looked so cool and were were put in the horrid for the same money so we complained and PAID to upgrade to a saver double room which was around $70 a night. Was alot better although air con was sooo loud! Toilets and showers were ok, bit dirty and not enough mirrors considering every girl seemed to be always doing themselves up! Lady at reception with black hair was lovely and really friendly. also free meals were good!

I had stayed first at the X-Base in Airlie Beach, where the rooms where perfectly clean, and therefore I chose the X-Base in Magnetic Island. But there, the rooms were not proper clean. Some people complained about bed bugs!
On the other hand, it was very noisy every night.
The diving school there was not a friendly place: When I went there and asked about diving possibilities, the first and only answer was: 60 dollars, 40 min. Never in my life had I been told about time restrictions while diving, especially considering that I’d have probably gone alone with the master. My general impression of this country: they just care about our money!

I stayed at Base two weeks ago. The price for a hostel on a beautiful island was absolutly okay and the kitchen big enough. Unfortunately it was full of ants. Furthermore it was supposed to close at 9, which means, that at nine they just shutted the doors down without even asking everyone if they had something left in the kitchen. Then, they just throwed all the left food away. It happend to another guest, even while she was standig besides her food. The next morning I tried to talk to the reception about what happed, until a tall, blonde women from the reception interfeered and started to insult me rudely, even though I stayed polite the whole time. I have no idea how she got that job, but I was never treated this way by anyone, especially not by people, who work in hospitality. I can really not understand why she works as a receptionist, when she clearly has no people-skills at all.

Its so sad because besides the kitchen and that woman, the hostel and the staff was quite nice, although you have to stand up very early if you want to get snorkel equipment.

When you are backpacking... you do tend to lower your standards and just make the best of any situation... this is what happened here.

I'll start by saying we had an awesome time on Magnetic Island and that was partly due to Base Backpackers... the bar area was great fun, pumping music at night and cheap drinks. When you're drinking you don't tend to notice or really think about the flaws of the place, but it really does need work doing, especially considering it's part of the Base chain, who are quite big in Australia... they should really know better.

We stayed in a mixed six bed dorm, it was fine and relatively clean so no real problems there. However, the facilities on site were pretty poor, even terrible. The communal shower block, especially the guys one... was literally falling apart, you couldn't even nudge the cubicle wall slightly without it swaying. The kitchen was dirty with flies everywhere, no equipment for cooking and for such a big resort there really wasn't enough space.

On the plus they did serve nice meals and breakfast in the morning, so cooking wasn't enitrely necessary, but not great for those on a budget.

The pool was a mess during our stay, but they were refurbishing it, so hopefully it will be completed by now.

The staff were pretty unfriendly to be honest, out of all the hostels we stayed at the people here did stand out as the most unfriendly and unwilling to help... literally no smiles, miserable bunch.

Like I say we did have a good time at night while drinking, but we barely stayed at the hostel during the day finding nicer places to go on the island... it was literally a place to crash.

One thing that was pretty bad was this really rowdy group of army guys who had come off tour, two of the nights we stayed they were there, causing trouble and taking over the whole place... there didnt seem to be any security or staff controlling there behaviour which was worrying.

We had a laugh, but I wouldn't stay here again and probably wouldn't say to others to go unless it's for a party.

My boyfriend stayed in this hostel 5 years ago and he was so exited to stay there again. The first impression of the reception and beach area was really good. Then we had a look to the rooms. We travelled with an other couple. We booked one Double/Twin Ocean View and one Double/Twin Ensuite Ocean View both rooms had space for 4 more people. In one room the window was broken and they put a curtain in front of it. And they put a piece of timber in front of the broken window. It has looked like that this window were damaged a long time ago. My boyfriend was shocked about this facilities and all others of us too. His opinion is that they have done no maintenance in the last 5 years without the reception area. We had a look around and found a really nice appartment with ocean view for only 70 $ more next to the ferry terminal. I can not recommend this hostel. You will not have a relaxed beach holiday in this hostel.
