Owner description: If it's nature you like, don't miss a walk through Northern Australia's largest colony of wild koalas on Magnetic Island. The remarkable Forts Walk is the best vantage point for wildlife, spectacular rocky coves and historic military sites. With 360 degree sweeping views of the coast and Coral Sea, this is a walk guaranteed to impress. Home to the best preserved WWII fortification on the eastern seaboard, the Magnetic Island Forts Walk is a reminder of just how close Australia came to being invaded. The walk includes The Forts gun emplacements which are still intact and offers interpretive signage along the way, providing a great insight into the significance of the area. Enjoy this walk in the early morning or late afternoon for the best chance of spotting koalas. Be sure to take water and wear appropriate walking shoes as there are some steep climbs on this walk. “Historical walk”

Great walk. Amazing views from the forts. We also found koalas on the walk, which was lovely for the children to see them in a natural surroundings instead of an animal park. It's a must do on magnetic island

“Nice Walk - Lookout for Koalas”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2014

This is a steady climb to the old WWII gun emplacement. You stroll through the bush and it's one of the best routes to see Koalas in their natural habitat. We were lucky enough to see three at separate locations along the way.

“A "Must Do" when on Magnetic Island”

A great walk, pretty easy going, aprox 1.5hr return. Stunning views, interesting history along the way and almost guarenteed to see a Koala in the wild - whats not to love!

“History - and you'll probably see a koala”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2014

Easy walk up to the fort with some sites to see along the way but the circuit around the gun emplacements can be challenging for older people - lots of steps but worth the effort if you're interested in military history. We saw two koalas during our walk. The local bus drops off and picks up.

“Great Walk - saw some koalas too!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2014 via mobile

Yes if you're in Magnetic Island, you should do this walk. Set aside 2hrs if you want to enjoy the views, spot koalas and see all the old military installations (ruins) up there. You could do it in 90mins but we saw a few koalas so we wanted to stop and stare and take photos!
It's pretty hot and dry up there so I would suggest you start your walk early and get back no later than midday if possible. The UV factor up there is high so the sun can be pretty hot. Wear a hat for sure!

Make sure you do some other walks too - you can walk to Arcadia from the Forts Walk bus stop. That walk is about 3-4km I think through the bush. We did that one too and enjoyed it the most!
