Owner description: If it's nature you like, don't miss a walk through Northern Australia's largest colony of wild koalas on Magnetic Island. The remarkable Forts Walk is the best vantage point for wildlife, spectacular rocky coves and historic military sites. With 360 degree sweeping views of the coast and Coral Sea, this is a walk guaranteed to impress. Home to the best preserved WWII fortification on the eastern seaboard, the Magnetic Island Forts Walk is a reminder of just how close Australia came to being invaded. The walk includes The Forts gun emplacements which are still intact and offers interpretive signage along the way, providing a great insight into the significance of the area. Enjoy this walk in the early morning or late afternoon for the best chance of spotting koalas. Be sure to take water and wear appropriate walking shoes as there are some steep climbs on this walk. Went for this walk twice, once in the evening and once in the morning to catch the sunrise, is a tough walk at places but has plenty of exploration spots for wildlife, world war 2 bunkers and gun points and reach the top, see the whole island and sea. So beautiful.

Only thing was disappointed about was the signs at each point describing the buildings had been removed, and vandals had graffi the bunkers, always someone really! no respect.

Rememer to look in the trees you can spot a koala (drop bear) looking sleepy if your lucky

Don't forget sunscreen, hat, sunnies, and tee

“Great views of the Island”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

The walk gave us a great view of the Island and we even saw two koalas along the way. It was an easy to medium walk with some steps involved, but shaded all the way.

“Best view on the island”
Reviewed January 19, 2014 via mobile

This is a great walk, with the best view on the island. This is the tropics so go early to avoid the heat and sun. Take plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes and don't forget your camera. Keep an eye out for koalas.

“lovely views from the top”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

it was a very hot day when we did it and there were millions of horseflies which was annoying but the top has lovely views and it is quite a nice walk going up with the chance of seeing koalas!

“Spectacular Views”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

The Island Forts walk are really only for the fit and energetic. These walks take you high up into the boulder strewn heights around the fort where you have spectacular views of the sea and surrounding island. Always wear a hat and take plenty of water because the sun is relentless and you can find yourself a victim of sunstroke or heatstroke very easily.
