Owner description: If it's nature you like, don't miss a walk through Northern Australia's largest colony of wild koalas on Magnetic Island. The remarkable Forts Walk is the best vantage point for wildlife, spectacular rocky coves and historic military sites. With 360 degree sweeping views of the coast and Coral Sea, this is a walk guaranteed to impress. Home to the best preserved WWII fortification on the eastern seaboard, the Magnetic Island Forts Walk is a reminder of just how close Australia came to being invaded. The walk includes The Forts gun emplacements which are still intact and offers interpretive signage along the way, providing a great insight into the significance of the area. Enjoy this walk in the early morning or late afternoon for the best chance of spotting koalas. Be sure to take water and wear appropriate walking shoes as there are some steep climbs on this walk. “No Koalas”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

We were told that this was the walk to do if we wanted to see Koalas, but we didn't see any ! There is a vast area of thick forest for them to live in off the track. The old military installations were good to have a look at and the views were pretty good from the top. The circular walk around the fort at the top is very tricky when defending and not for the frail.

“Koalas a highlight”
Reviewed September 28, 2013

The walk was hot but we were rewarded with views of koalas at 2 different locations on the walk. It was disappointing the only one of the forts was accessible. The views were quite good.

“Interesting walk with koalas in the wild”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

The Forts Walk on Magnetic Island is a 4 km return walk which takes you to the structures that were placed there during World War II to protect shipping stationed nearby in Cleveland Bay. At the end of the track are ordinance storage areas, gun turret emplacements, a command post, signal station and rangefinder.

PROS

- it's free
- it's easy to get to the start of the walk, either by car or local bus. Just catch the 250 bus (towards Horseshoe Bay) from the ferry terminal and ask for the Forts Walk stop. At that bus stop, just cross the road to the start of the track.
- there are koalas in the wild to see
- there are many nice views and photographic opportunities

CONS

- no toilets or water on the track (take water with you)
- the track to the forts has a lot of uphill sections, including steps

Certainly worth the effort if you are on Magnetic Island and enjoy the exercise.

“Fort walk”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

It is a little hard to get to by bus but worth the trip. The scenery is stunning would recommend trainers or walking boots. Very few people seem to do the trails on the island which is a shame as there is a network of tracks and they are well worth the effort.
