Just had another wonderful week at Island Palms. Accommodation is so clean, comfortable and a great location. Perfect to relax and chill out! I love watching the ferries come and go, from the patio. I will definitely be back.
Thank you to John and Sheena for keeping Island Palms so welcoming!

The best feature/s of the resort are the fabulous Managers John and Sheena who excel in customer service and good efficient management. The resort itself is 12 x 2 bedroom, full kitchen, 2 bathroom units, all up 1, 2 or 3 flights of stairs. Each bedroom has an ensuite, making having guests comfortable with the built in privacy. The units are well maintained and constantly being upated. The air conditionng when needed is efficient. All rooms look over the pool into the gardens.

A very warm welcome awaits you at Island Palms. The warmest welcome - apart from the glorious sun at the end of a very long winter for us Sydney folk - came from Sheena and John who are the perfect hosts. We could kick ourselves for missing the informative Monday night drinks, nibbles and welcome party they host by the pool each week.

Magnetic Island (aka "Maggie") is the strangely beautiful but cash-strapped poor relation to most of the asset-rich islands up north. That just suited us just fine. We're not into big resorts or paying vast amounts of money only to see mud-flats at low tide from a mega-expensive room. It's nice to stay in a place like Island Palms where you feel OK about your sandy feet (no carpet and you will hate the shout-at-you but practical floor tiles) in your spacious 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment and happily borrow bags from the bucket at the bottom of your stairwell to take to the supermarket & bottleshop just around the corner. We had aircon in lounge and 2 bedrooms and were lucky enough to score a new dishwasher in unit 6. All was spotless. This is a time-share place thrown open to the public and being constantly upgraded. The heated pool is fab.

It took a couple of days for the charm of Maggie to win us over. The attractive palm-lined beach across the road from Island Palms is full of dead coral .Footwear, or a good eye, is recommended for your daily walk or swim. After day 1, I did think - hmmmm? have I made the right choice?

Maggie's a weird place. It's like someone got a Monopoly board full of cards and just threw them over the island, avoiding most of it, which is National Park. The smart new ferry terminal is at Nelly Bay with a new breakwater, a resort and cafe and some swanky apartments overlooking the marina. There is a big IGA supermarket but no bank (however, a machine in IGA) and you have to go off in all directions to find whatever else you need. So catch the bus!!

With ferrys arriving every hour from Townsville from early morning to late in the evening the bus service is crucial to Maggie. It is superb - no grumpy old buggers stamping on the brakes when old dears try to negotiate the passageway. Instead, tropically clad gents of a certain age cheerfully remove you of small amounts of dosh ($6.70 for an all day pass) and happily pick you up and drop off where you desire on their convoluted route around the island. Destinations are limited but seemingly endless: Nelly Bay and hinterland (PO, supermarket, bank, bottle shop, pharmacy) Picnic Bay (nice pub/ interesting little museum/gorgeous but strangely empty beach) Arcadia (big pub, newsagent, as well as lovely Alma Bay just a couple of mins walk away) and Horseshoe Bay (fabbo beach, great pub, small supermarket, good watersports). The bus is often packed, so it pays to be there on time or be the object of the bus drivers fun.

We took advantage of Island Palms car hire offer and hired a 4WD for a day to negotiate really bad roads to beaches you can't get to with local car hire. Highly recommended. Otherwise, there is heaps to do - we walked our legs off. The Forts Walk is well worth it - we were rewarded by a pod of whales heading south.

Maggie is daggy, as is Island Palms which is locked in a timewarp of maybe 30 years ago but it's so beautiful and so friendly. Every single person we met there was having a wonderful time - even the locals. I loved how so many locals said they were "going to Australia" (aka Townsville) - isn't that special? So go guys - be quick! It may be turned into something really exxy before you know it.

Room Tip: We liked unit 6!

I stayed here with a friend and loved it. The Resort apartments are constantly getting upgrades (eg. all bathrooms updated in the last year or so) and the rooms are immaculately clean so don't let the outside of the resort fool you, it may not be the newest resort on the island but it was a great place to stay. Managers are friendly and helpful. The beach is across the road and the resort has a pool. Magnetic Island was a surprise, beautiful beaches and hardly a person on them. The island is like a hidden treasure. The most stress we had was choosing where to have lunch and dinner.

Great location, beach across the road, supermarket and restaurents close. Mix up with booking a hire car-double booked, but hosts John and Sheena gave excellent customer service. They definately took that extra step and went beyond their expected duties.
They arranged a weekly, meet the other guests afternoon, which was relaxing, friendly and enjoyable. John talked about various tourist attractions, walks, and places to eat.
Would definately stay again.
