“Definitely the best accommodation of our trip”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

The hosts went out of their way to make us feel welcome during our one night stay. The rooms were very clean, the beds comfortable, the food delicious and the hospitality warm. The house itself is very nice and the location is good for walks and for the various beaches. The hosts were also more than happy to collect us from the ferry and to drop us off at the start point for several of the walks. Would definitely recommend to anyone spending time on Magnetic Island.

My wife and I stayed with Robyn and Phil for three nights. We have stayed at B&Bs, hotels and resorts across the globe, and found our stay at the Magnetic Island B&B very relaxing. Robyn has set up a 'traditional' bed and breakfast. This means you are welcomed into someone's home and share certain facilities (bathroom, lounge, garden/pool) with your hosts. Some B&Bs have become more 'boutique' in format, with toiletries being provided in an en suite bathroom, guests lounge etc. If that is what you look for, of 5 star luxury, then the Magnetic Island B&B will not be for you.

However, if you enjoy getting to know your hosts, chatting to other guests (there are only two guest rooms at the Magnetic Island B&B) and taking a relaxing pace as you see the local sights, then this would be a great choice. Robyn and Phil provide warm and genuine hospitality, good food (Robyn's lemon butter is truly delicious) and a pleasant locale to operate from.

Magnetic Island is small, as the majority of the island is a nature reserve. The variety of attractions and services that you might find on the mainland are therefore not present. This also means that the pace of life on the island is slightly slower than Townsville/Queensland, which makes it perfect for a getaway for a few days.

The Magnetic Island B&B is about 2kms from Horseshoe Bay and its various restaurants/cafes/beach, which is an easy and pleasant walk. The B&B is also about 1km from the start of a number of good walks. Robyn was very happy to chauffeur us to the start of the walks, but as our 'normal' lives are quite sedentary we like to walk as much as we can when on holiday.

All in all, everything we expected or were promised (such as collection from the ferry etc) was delivered and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Robyn and Phil.

Thank you so much for your enthusiastic review; you can be sure it is much appreciated. We are grateful that you enjoyed what we have to offer and that you have taken the time to put in writing the differences with regard to the different types of B&B's. Happy travels, Robyn & Phil

The first 'B' was great, the second 'B' extremely tasty. Situated in a beautiful part of the island, with deserted snorkeling beaches, scenic hiking paths and the cute little village of Horseshoe Bay, this place is simple awesome. Robyn has a great sense for detail and Phil is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. Their efforts certainly contributed to making our stay as enjoyable as possible. Absolutely loved it.

Phil and Robyn were the most friendly and helpful people. I can not say enough things about their bed and breakfast and Magnetic island. It is a wonderful place to stay. Phil picked us up from the ferry and was funny and friendly.

Robyn offered desserts when we arrived. The house was very clean. The bed was comfortable. The breakfast of fresh fruit eggs and bacon was tasty. I loved eating outside while the variety of Australian birds flew around in the morning.

The location was far from city lights so the night sky was filled with stars. They milky way was clearly visiable on the nights were were there.

Robyn helped us to find Koalas in a neighbors yard, Amazing. She also took us to the Rock wallabies before we headed home and we fed them some grass. I loved feeding the lorikeets and taking the forts walk.

Unfortunately we only stayed two nights in this wonderful location. We took a two week vacation to Australia from the U.S. I wish I would have taken at a minimum one more night on Magnetic island. It was one of the best locations we visited. We missed some of the hikes to the beaches.

The only very small comment i have is the bikes they had needed some work. I would have fixed them myself i I had some tools. The breaks needed some adjustments but I needed a plier and wrench. We used the bikes as is and they were fine for the flatter areas.

You can get around by bus or walking with no problems either.

Robyn and Phil really made this an unforgetable experience. Thank you. This is one of the best places I have ever stayed.

From the moment we arrived, Robyn and Phil treated us like royalty. She first served us tea, coffee and delicious homemade cookies while helping us plan our two day stay on Magnetic Island. She gave us a personal tour of nearby sights including showing us wild koalas in eucalyptus trees and kangaroos jumping about in neighboring yards. She is also Australia's "bird whisperer". She had Lorikeets eating from our hands. The rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. Robyn served us the best breakfasts we had on our two week journey through Queensland. Our one regret is that we did not stay longer. Phil and Robyn are the consummate hosts. - Duane & Delene from San Jose, California.

What a fantastic B&B. My sister and I stayed here for three nights and had a wonderful holiday. From picking us up at the ferry wharf to showing us around and even offering to give us a lift occasionally when we were heading out, Robyn and Phil really make this place with their generosity, hospitality and local knowledge. They make you feel more like house guests than paying customers.
The bedroom was clean and comfortable, you only share the (very large) bathroom with one other room and this never posed a problem and was always immaculate. Breakfast was a delicious fresh fruit plate served each morning along with a choice of cooked breakfast or cereal and guests can help themselves to tea, coffee and Robyn's home made cakes and biscuits, which are always available.
We enjoyed walking down to Horseshoe Bay but the bus service is just a short walk away and one service even drops you right by the property.
Robyn was able to take us to see Koalas in the wild, a beautiful spot for butterflies, feed the lorikeets in their garden and advise us on some of the walking trails.
It is a beautiful island and I would not hesitate to recommend this B&B to any other visitors.

My partner and I stayed for one night, and found it overall ok, but we would definitely try other places next time on Magnetic Island. Am not sure what the fuss is all about – I have stayed in many places around Australia and a few B&Bs, and found this place underwhelming.

For starters, when we rang ahead to confirm our pick-up time from the ferry terminal, our calls were diverted to the mobile number. After about 7 attempts with no answer and leaving 2 messages, we arrived at the terminal without any welcome, much less the promised complimentary transport. We ended up catching the public bus to get there. Luckily the bus driver made a detour for us, as the property isn’t part of the scheduled route but approx 8 mins walk from the closest bus stop.

However, once we arrived, we were greeted by Robyn who immediately offered us some beverages and biscuits, and who finally checked her phone for any unanswered messages... whoops! She did apologise, but it was annoying that we had to pay for our own bus fares on top of finding our own way there.

But the main deal-breaker about Magnetic Island B&B is this:

Your bedroom is just another room in the shared house, where every word you say and sound you make could potentially be heard by the hosts and/or other guests. You also have to share the bathroom & toilet with the other guests. In other words, there wasn’t a sense of privacy or luxury to be yourself in your own space, (no matter how flimsy the illusion is sometimes). Definitely not the place for newlyweds or a special getaway.

The owners have made an effort to create a partition between the bedrooms and the open-plan style living area for more privacy; however it has that feel of a homestay. This may be ideal if you happen to like this style of communal living, but for $130 p/night, I expected our own bathroom at least, no matter how small.

Our bedroom was not special, overly comfortable nor generous except for its size. One gets the feeling that these were the bedrooms left behind by the owners’ kids. (Their photos still adorn the house.) Little attempt has been made to modernise the bedroom furniture or decor. Miscellaneous cardboard boxes and canvas paintings were stored in our bedroom wardrobe.

We also had mixed feelings on:

- The bar of ‘Imperial Leather’ soap summed up all the toiletries provided.
- Complimentary bikes with helmets were available – however their brakes and tyres need attention.
- Koala-spotting tour in an adjacent street. It would have been better to walk there (being only 2 mins away), but our host Phil seemed to think it fine to drive right around the block to get there. Still, he DID spot a koala, which can be hard to see.
- Neighbouring dogs barking off and on throughout the night.

The good stuff:

- Complimentary chocolates on arrival.
- Complimentary tea & coffee, home-made biscuits and trail mix always available.
- Our breakfast orders were taken at the table while we munched on freshly-sliced fruit. When the hot breakfast came, most things were well-cooked and delicious (sausages were underdone). Robyn’s lemon butter is pretty amazing.

Overall, Magnetic Island B&B took great care of us in terms of our full stomachs. Maybe it’s ok for first-time tourists to Australia who have never seen koalas or rainbow lorikeets. But as far as the ‘traditional B&B’ tag goes – I would suggest some updating is needed, or to go somewhere else if you are seeking more privacy or a romantic getaway. The closest beach in Horseshoe bay is also about 20 mins walk away.

Room Tip: BYO alcohol and favourite snacks to store in the guest fridge.

Thank you for you frank assesment of Magnetic Island Bed and Breakfast, we understand that the style of accomodation we offer is not for everyone.
We would just like to follow up on some points made in the review,
We can only apologise for the mix up on arrival.
The bus route from Nelly Bay to Horseshoe Bay includes Gifford St, which places guests 300 metres from our doorstep. (You have been misinformed)
House was constructed in 2009 including feature wall so isn't really outdated but perhaps not to everyones taste.
You may not have realised that the rooms are soundproof with sealed door to main area
Enquiry at time of booking would establish bathroom arrangements, some guests have decided to stay elsewhere rather than share with two other guests and we understand their choice.
Soap provided in rooms is an extra as most guest carry their toiietries with them, however we will consider what products can be added to assist guests. (Good Point)
Bikes are a bit of an adventure and are being replaced but as it is only 15-20 mins walk to the beach/restaurants, we consider them an optional extra.
Driving a short distance to view the koalas in the wild was considered more comfortable for the guest than walking (some guests elect to walk at other times).
It is unfortunate that you were unable to enjoy your stay with us and we hope that your experience here doesn't prevent you from returning to our lovely Island as there are many beautiful things to see and do and plenty of other accommodation which may be better suited to your requirements. Happy travels and warm regards, Robyn & Phil Bellinger
