“Amazing Experience!”
Reviewed August 7, 2008

We had the ground floor of the original building which is probably used by the owners when not booked. It is a bit darker than the new block but that was not a problem as most waking hours were spent outdoors.
While our interest in birds and the local flora and fauna are general rather than knowledgeable or specialist, the sheer scale of birdwatching potential together with the boundless enthusiasm of Andrew and Trish threatened to turn us into serial birders. An in-conceivable variety type of birds, quarrelsome fruitbats and the biggest moth in Australia and that was just one evening!
All in all a great experience in an idyllic rural location perfect for exploring the Daintree forest park. Don't miss the dusk trip on the river for spotlighting roosting birds, bats, bugs, crocs and, above all, stars with no light pollution.
Trish and Andrew have encyclopedic knowledge of the area and are only too pleased to help with bookings and advice.
Breakfasts on the balcony including exotic rainforest fruits rounded off a great experience.
If you are looking for urban sophistication, a secure, sterile environment and a huge range of dining out options this is not for you. For everyone else - don't miss it.

We spent three wonderful nights at the Red Mill House in late May 2008. The rooms are very nice, the included breakfast (full of diverse Queensland fruits) is delicious and the hosts, Andrew and Trish, are outstanding. Andrew and Trish's standard for customer service is on par with that of the best ryokan in Japan (for those of you that don't know, Japanese ryokan, or traditional guest houses, are world famous for providing probably the best, most considerate customer service in the world). When we went on a road trip to Cape Tribulation, our hosts warned us about how expensive water was on the Cape and then they supplied us with ice water, bug repellent, an umbrella, etc etc. They are always invaluable resources for local information ranging from bird migrations to the best snorkeling vs diving trips out to the Great Barrier reef. Our experience with them was really one of the highlights of our trip.

You might read in a previous message about how someone recommends reconfirming your reservation. I took that advice and reconfirmed. During our stay, Trish asked us why we reconfirmed and I told her because I read about what happened to another tripadvisor reviewer. Trish then explained to me that the issue was the result of the customer booking the reservation via a disreputable travel agent that took the customer's money and then never booked the reservation. In other words, book the room directly over the red mill house's website and you'll have no problems whatsoever.

Although my gf and I are not serious birdwatchers, we had a superb time at the Red Mill House. Someday if I become an experienced bird watcher I'd like to go back and stay a few more days.

Oh- one last word for the wise- they are only a few restaurants in Daintree village and we felt that they were quite overpriced. If you are feeling trapped by the limited dinner selection, you might want to drive 20 minutes south to the town of Mossman where there are several less touristy places I believe. You could even go as far as Port Douglass if you want a much greater range of options.

In over 38 years world travel, Red Mill House in Daintree is one of the few establishments that I have returned to. My visit in early April was my fourth. Not once have I ever been less than totally overawed by the amount of attention that Andrew and Trish Forsyth lavish upon their guests. The advice given to guests regarding regional activities and whereabouts of local bird and other wildlife species is absolutely priceless. Indeed I feel one would be hard pressed to find more detailed information on The Daintree and Cape Tribulation without employing the services of a professional, specialist guide.

The accommodation at Red Mill House is excellent and in my view, well worth the tariff. The breakfast alone is reason enough to return – jams, yoghurt and breads are all made in house and served with good humour at sometimes odd hours to suit guest requirements.

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Red Mill House.

Our latest trip to Australia came to a wonderful conclusion with our 4-night stay at the Red Mill House. We were pleased to find that this is one of those places where the web site accurately reflects what you get. We found Trish and Andrew to be a delightful couple and both were very knowledgeable and helpful about what was to be done and seen in the Daintree area--non-birding activities as well as birding. Going above and beyond most B&B hosts, they provided a cooler with cold water and bug repellant and/or a thermost of hot water, coffee, milk and cups for our wanderings by day in the car. Another nice touch was having plunge coffee makers available from early-morning through the evening.

Our ensuite room was very comfortable (being from Alaska, we did use the a/c at night, but could have just used the ceiling fan). We particularly enjoyed the beautiful gardens on the property and the verandah where we relaxed and watched/listened to the birds, sipped coffee and watched the sun come up and at night sipped wine and watched the moon come up. Trish's homemade bread, jams, and yogurt, along with the cereal and exotic (to us) fresh tropical fruits were so good and filling, we only made it to the hot breakfast foods once. Over the past 25+ years, we have stayed in numerous B&B's in Australia, Europe, and the U.S., and we rate our experience with Trish and Andrew at the Red Mill House at the top of our list.

We have been to Red Mill B&B on several occasions.
Each time it is a joy to come back and be made to feel so welcome.
Andrew and Trish are perfect hosts caring and involved but not intrusive into their guests personal lives. They are interested and knowledgeable, very helpful and good fun. Nothing is too much trouble; they are full of local advice and information and go out of their way to make people feel accepted and welcome.
The food, service, quality of rooms and their decor is of high quality.
Both Andrew and Trish are always ready to help and readily give of their time to make their guests feel at home.
We would thoroughly and unhesitatingly recommend any naturalist to visit their home.

Just a caveat for booking here - we had our stay (on our honeymoon, no less) booked and confirmed. The night before we were to show up - after travelling f. Ulhuru to Cairns, then driving up and arriving after dark - I emailed RMH to get directions. Only to be told they had no such reservation and they were full up. Our travel agency had a confirmation and we had the voucher for our 3 night stay - but were left scrambling - overnight and through an all-day's worth of travel - to find a place in Port Douglas.

So, I can't rate the experience - I'll give it 3 stars, to not take their overall rating - but definitely reconfirm before showing up!

Unfortunately, while the client had been issued a voucher for Red Mill House, the booking had never been made by the inbound travel agent. Direct bookings are always safer and more personal.

My wife and I stayed for one night at the Red Mill House B&B on our way from Wrotham Park to Cooktown. Trish and Andrew were very friendly and helpful, setting up dinner for us at a local cafe even though we arrived at a very late hour. The room was a little small, but nicely appointed and very clean. We really enjoyed the breakfast they served the next morning (cooked to order!), and wish we had more time to linger on the veranda. Would definitely recommend to others.
