“Nature at its best”
Reviewed November 11, 2016 for a stay in November 2016

Enjoying every meal on the deck - multiple appearances of the stunning Ulysses butterfly in front of the entirely private waterfall and along the river.

Inside the house the ceiling fans kept the humidity at a comfortable level.

Thank you for your review! It is a nature lovers paradise which we love to share. The Ulysses share our valley all year round and the Cairns Birdwings also make regular appearances. Glad you enjoyed your stay!

Such a beautiful place to call home for a few days. The best part was sitting on the decking watching the river and looking out for the turtles that liked to come by.

So glad you enjoyed your stay at Daintree Secrets! The deck is such a perfect place to sit and while away the hours watching the natural wonder that is the Daintree rainforest and the tumbling waterfalls. The tortoises and jungle perch are a special treat. It is also a haven for bird watches and butterfly lovers (like myself) . Thank you for taking the time to write your review!

“Beautiful location with private waterhole”
Reviewed July 10, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Stayed with 2 teenagers and a friend. We loved it, the location is idyllic once you get used to the steep driveway. Really amazing to have your own waterhole and mini massage waterfall. The mosquitoes and dampness are a bit of a turnoff but worth it for the amazing place. Thanks so much for sharing your lovely home.

Thank you for taking the time to send this review. Everyone loves the uniqueness of having you very own private swimming hole, complete with waterfall. The recent extended wet has made it difficult to dry the place out, but it sounds like you had some sunshine!
The mozzie coils provided are generally enough to keep the mosquitoes at bay. With the wet finally at at an end we should see both of these problems resolved. Glad you were able to enjoy swimming on our lovely winter days.....

“Lovely place but could be managed much better”
Reviewed July 5, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We thoroughly enjoyed the surrounds, but the accommodation has mould issues.

We were unfortunate to experience very humid weather. There is no way of drying clothes and there was no scheduled change of bed linen/towels for one week.

Hi George, thank you for your review. It was unfortunate that you had wet weather for your 11 night stay. In unseasonable conditions of continuous 100 % humidity, it is impossible for anything to dry. We hoped the mid-stay service, which provided new towels and bed linen, would have remedied the situation. We will in future offer a change of linen more often in extreme conditions like you experienced. I'm glad you were able to enjoy the beauty of the Daintree and again thank you for your feedback.

“Amazing stay!!! Absolutely perfect.”
Reviewed April 10, 2016 for a stay in April 2016

Pictures do not do it justice!!!!
I couldn't fault a thing- the whole place was magical.
The swimming hole has turtles swimming around. No where could be as great as it was there, the whole place was perfect it supplied everything you needed.

Only tip is mosquitos- bring so much repellent because the whole area is full of them. And spiders!!!

I stayed there for 2 nights and I didn't want to leave. I warn you though there's not any signal until about an hour drive away, but that's what made it so great. It's peaceful!

“Good but not great”
Reviewed July 18, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

As others have mentioned, Daintree Secrets is not without its flaws. The driveway down is steep and rather treacherous (particularly at night), but we managed without incident. The house is located in a lovely, private setting and the creek, small waterfall and swimming hole were fabulous. My two boys loved diving into the cool, clear water, whilst parents and grandparents watched from the spacious verandah. The beds (two queens upstairs and two singles downstairs were fine, although the downstairs bedroom was rather dark and musty. The bathrooms were serviceable but nothing special, and less than what one might expect from a house advertised as an "executive style retreat" on the website.

There were, however, several disappointments and several genuine concerns with the house: Firstly, whilst the featured daybed is an impressive piece of furniture, it was totally impractical. It was nearly impossible for the grandparents to sit upon, and its size precluded other, more traditional furnishings from fitting in the house. Put simply, there were no comfortable couches or lounge chairs in the house, meaning no place for the six of us to relax. Additionally, whilst the house sleeps seven, there were only five dining chairs at the table. Secondly, whilst the website boasts of the hydroelectric system, this has not worked for some time, power being provided by a diesel generator which we had to turn on and off each day. This was a minor inconvenience but, aside from the 'false advertising' on the website, not the type of thing one would expect when paying top dollar. The dishwasher, as noted by others, did not work and we had to dig around for instructions on how to use the oven. We did not mind that there was limited telephone coverage, nor did we particularly expect TV reception, though I imagine it would be possible with a satellite.

The biggest problems, however, related to safety. The clothes line is located on a narrow section of decking at the back of the house. One must lean over an exposed area, to hang the clothes, and my wife who is quite tall, slipped off the deck whilst stretching to reach the far side of the line (see attached photo). She severely scraped and bruised her legs and hips, wedging herself between the deck and rocky slope. Additionally, my father-in-law tripped and fell several times on the verandah steps, which could use some high visibility tape or paint to indicate their edges.

So, in the end, the location of Daintree Secrets was its best attribute. We enjoyed our stay but would look elsewhere if we were to return to the region.

Hi Seth,

Thanks for taking the time to write us a review.
I'm sorry to hear that you had some disappointments with your stay but glad that your trip was enjoyable overall.
The property has recently come under new management and repairs and upgrades have been made, and are continuing to be made.

In regards to the drive-way, we are aware this is an issue and so have long planned to fix it. Fortunately, the driveway will be repaved (and made less steep) by January 2016. So any future guests after this time should not have this problem.
We have recently replaced the upstairs bedrooms' furniture, including new King-size luxurious beds with high quality linen. The place should now be more satisfactory in its 'Retreat' status.

I'm sorry to hear that the grandparents found the daybed difficult, and that you found it uncomfortable. As part of this recent furniture upgrade, we now have portable beanbag lounges (2 which each fit 2 people) which can be used inside or out. We feel it would make inside quite cramped if we had 7 dining chairs inside ? instead, we suggest large groups eat outside or move some chairs from outside to in.

The hydroelectric system has been under repair for some time now ? many new parts needed to be ordered. It should be back up and running before January 2016. There is a new welcome booklet to the property which includes instructions on the oven. However, there are no plans to install telephone or TV reception at the property, as for many it serves as a retreat from the modern world. We ask guests to exercise caution as the property is situated on the rainforest's uneven terrain and we have tried to leave this undisturbed. In response to your complaint, we have put some visible tape down on the verandah in hopes that future guests do not encounter these issues again.

Thanks again for taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback. We hope that you choose to visit Daintree Secrets again in the future when it has undergone further changes under its new management.

Warm regards,
Ellen

“A flawed gem.”
Reviewed December 10, 2014 for a stay in November 2014

Daintree Secrets is a gem in the wilds but it has it's flaws.
The house was easy to find following the directions given. The steep driveway is rather eroded and every bit as scary as previous reviewers have indicated, but I managed it in my standard (not 4WD) car without major problems.
The pictures on the website do full justice to the beauty of this place. It had, unfortunately, been rather dry so the creek was flowing lower than usual, and power had to be supplied by a diesel generator rather than the hydro electric system. This did not affect my stay at all.(There are rather worrying warning everywhere about not over-using power, but this was not a problem for me.)
The site is almost entirely private - there is a house to one side but you can only see it (and vice-versa) at the extremes of the property. On the other side is a cleared area, presumably an unused building block - this does rather spoil the view from the main bedroom.
The furnishing is decent and the towels and sheets clean and in good condition.
There is a gas stove and a microwave oven, as well as a barbecue on the verandah overlooking the river. Crockery was initially hard to locate being hidden under cloth covers in the lounge area. Advice not to use the dishwasher (too much energy use) was redundant as the internal shelves had been removed.
There is no mobile phone signal at the house (Cow Bay is the closest place in range) and no internet access. The website announces a TV, which is present but there is no TV signal. A selection od DVDs is provided (a rather eclectic choice including a drumming tutorial) but the remote control is missing (apparently it broke and was too difficult to replace) so DVDs can only be watched from the beginning to the end, without subtitles or any other extras. If you have a TV series without the option of playing all episodes you will only be able to watch the first one.
I had no problem with insects and enjoyed the visit of an occasional gecko. The upper bedroom was surprisingly hot in the evening but cooled adequately with the use of the ceiling fan. The sky was surprisingly bright at night (it was close to full moon) and the noise of the creek not too loud.
I enjoyed my stay and am considering another visit despite the flaws.
