“Book a two bedroom suite”
Reviewed August 19, 2007

We asked for their "best" room, and were very pleased with the result, a light, airy and spacious two bedroom suite with wraparound balcony overlooking the main street. Even if there are only two of you travelling I suggest the two bedroom option as it is only a few dollars more than a superior suite and is vastly more comfortable. Another couple who were in a standard room came to ours for a drink before dinner and immediately asked to be moved to something similar. So ask for suite 201, it is the only one with extra windows in the lounge and main bedroom. The Sovereign and its restaurant were of higher quality than expected for a Queensland outback hotel (we've stayed in some real shockers!). The restaurant is closed Sundays, so book an early dinner at the local Bowls Club, the food is nothing special but an interesting local experience. Best breakfast is with the early morning fishermen at the kiosk near the wharf.

  • Liked — Having space and light in the room and large flat TV
  • Disliked — Very minimal kitchen for a long stay

We spent one night at the Sovereign Resort during a long tour through Australia and fortunately the owner waited that we arrived as the reception usually closes at 6pm and we arrived after 8, due to a long 4WD tour from the North (don't forget that we are in the Tropics and it gets dark very soon in the afternoon). And they were also very nice to cook an exceptional barramundi with papaya for us even if the kitchen was already closed.
The resort is really nice, even if the room is nothing special, anyway we enjoyed very much the fan and the air-conditioning in a 95% humid place.
When we woke up, we eventually could see where we ended up, as when we arrived it was so dark. And the view from our balcony was a spectacle. The breakfast was served on a large terrace and it was really good and various.
Instead of leaving after breakfast, we asked to have a late check-out in order to enjoy some hours in the wonderful lagoon pool and they accepted without problems. So, at the end we have been satisfied with this hotel and our expectations have been met.

Went up from Sydney but manager would not give us one minute of late check out after 10am, despite fact that rooms were being cleaned at 2pm the day before.
Rooms also small and poor value.
Recommend you stay well away from it.
