Great spot - Room for improvement. We stayed in a 2 bedroom "apartment" with access to large terrace (shared by two other apartments - which was quite nice because we talked to our neigbours) - good sized living area - bathroom and toilet had been recently upgraded (top marks for the style) - HOWEVER - no extra fans im loo, second bedroom was small - laike a prison and it wasw NOT and apartment!! plent of room for a stove, big fridge, washing machione and dryer - but it had none of these - overpriced and misrepresented - great potential

We were disappointed with this hotel as it lacked warmth. The room was basic and we didn't enjoy a good sleep as it was noisy outside, the bed was hard and cramped and the airconditioner and fan were both noisy. The bathroom is dark. we ate lunch in the Pub and the salad was soggy and we ate dinner upstairs in the restaurant and it was just average. the service at the restaurant was slow and not very professional. I wanted to stay an extra night in Cooktown , so had a look at the Seaview Motel and the deluxe rooms there were superior as well as the better view and quieter position ( and $20 less a night). the 1770 restaurant is a better place to eat.
Nice pool and garden

Went to Cooktown for wedding. Looked on the internet for accomm, thinking there would be a Hilton or similar, the Sovereign was the most highly rated. It was great. Basic room, a little larger then you would find in a standard hotel. Little balcony overlooking the main street. Cooktown is tiny, so its close to everything. Great hosts. nice pool. Good food. Largest place in the area so very good for groups.

We enjoyed our stay here. On the plus side, the hotel is very well maintained and looks elegant. The pool is large and warm. The rooms are smart and very comfortable with fans and aircon. There is also a laundry for guests which is charged at AUS$4. There is off street parking which is free. The location is also ideal, right on the main street, with our room having a river/sea view. On the downside, the initial reception we received was adequate and functional, though neither particularly friendly nor welcoming. This contrasted with the service we received everywhere else in Australia. We were, however, very satisfied with our stay here and would definitely stay again.

We drove to cooktown from undara a lovely sealed road with more than expected to see on the way. This town is truely old school australia very relaxed and friendly the only down side was we only stayed one night arriving mid afternoon leaving early the next day. I must recommend the ice coffee made for me by the bar man at the sovereign resort hotel it was the best scoring 9.5 on my ice coffe metre lossing half a point because there wasnt enough of it.We aye dinner at the pub and there was live entertainment (very pleasent) but dont go looking for raging nightlife the entertainment finished at 9pm and it seemed all of cooktown was in bed by 10pm on a saturday night.I recommend a trip up the lookout and unless you are feeling very fit i would advise driving up. There are also some nice wetlands on the way in to town which look quite interesting with quite an array of birds present when we went past.

We stayed in a two bedroom apartment that was very spacious. The beds were comfy and the apartment was very modern. The pool was amazing and I would love to have stayed longer! We ate in the restaurant and got the local favourite, barramundi which was delicious and followed it up with yummy gelato. We were told we could get internet in the reception, but didn't get a chance to follow it up. The hotel is located on the main strip of Cooktown and on the whole was very satisfactory.

After a fun, but at times intense trip up the Bloomfield Track from Cairns (you might hear a 4-wheel drive isn't necessary, but it really is!!), Cooktown and the Sovereign Resort were a great respite. Cooktown itself is tee-tiny with an excellent local vibe and all the eccentricities to match. Don't take along your watch and don't forget to take along your patience...nothing happens fast here, and well it shouldn't...it's vacation, right?

We stayed in Room 201, as recommended by a TripAdvisor reviewer here, and indeed, the room was great. However, I think room 210 (the room directly above 201) would have been even better due to its hieght and clearer view over the Endeavour River.

This room is classified as a two bedroom apartment, including one bathroom and a large living space including a living room (free sports and movie channels on the TV), dining area and kitchenette (lots of counter space, mini-fridge and microwave, coffee/tea making facilities). All rooms were air-conditioned. Everything is modern and tastfully decorated. The bathroom fixtures are very modern and the highlight of the apartment is its rainforest showerhead. Heaven!

This room is located in a building which has a large wraparound balcony around the entire building, meaning you will share the balcony with your neighbors (2 other apartments on this floor). However, this wasn't really a problem because the rooms are so long that your nearest neighbor's patio furniture is located quite some distance from yours.

The hotel staff is friendly and efficient. The Balcony Restaurant is very nice with a good varied menu (the Barrimundi is superb!!) and attentive wait-staff. Another highlight of the hotel is its lagoon pool. It is varied in depth (including a sloped entrance, good for little ones) and fun for all ages. The pool is surrounded by palms and various botanticals, complete with bird calls and a ton of butterflies. A very relaxing spot and not to be missed!

The only thing that would possibly need work was that the bathrooms are a bit dark. The lighting could be improved there. Otherwise, the Sovereign Resort is a terrific place to stay and I can highly recommend it to anyone for their stay in Cooktown.

  • Liked — Rainforest shower and the pool!!
  • Disliked — dank lighting in the bathroom
