Our son was working in Cooktown for a short period, so the rest of the family (3 adults) were looking for 2 bedroom & 2 bathrooms in town. Our son had a quick inspection of the Seaview and The Sovereign, and recommended this place. We were in unit 105 - ground floor on the main street. Both bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms, kitchen is minimal with microwave, bar fridge, toaster, kettle and sink. The ground floor units have complete screens around each unit, so private from the street and other units. The unit was very clean with only the occasional tiny spider on the ceiling, no mould, so full marks to the cleaners. Not sure how old the hotel is, but everything seemed reasonably new. Floors are polished concrete (at least in the ground floor units), which make a lot of sense in the tropics.
Nice resort style pool, not huge, but more than adequate. There's a gas BBQ at the pool which we used a few times.
Minor things to note -
While we were there in late Jan/early Feb, there were some renovations going on in the hotel section next door. However this didn't cause us any issues.
Car parking is mainly on the street in front of the units. There is a bit of off street parking, but the parks near the street units is fairly tight and not worth the effort if you have a largish car.

If you need 2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms, I'd say these are a good choice.

Room Tip: If you want a view, the best unit is on the north east street corner. Ground floor units on the stre...

Cooktown is probably the last major town in the tropical North West of Australia as you can get. It is therefore a remote location.

This is a real gem of a property & the fact that the owners have kept it in such good condition given this is in the tropics after all is a very good thing.

Location is on the Main Street of Cooktown.

Reception is good & the staff are very helpful.
Rooms are clean, modern & the air conditioning works a treat! For this who are used to the tropics & only want a fan there is one of these in the room too.

Breakfast is nothing flash but is acceptable.

There is a nice side resort pool as well.

I would come back again without hesitation.

HINT: there is a very unique gift shop almost across the road called Croc Shop Cooktown Souvenirs Tel: (07)40695880 run by Linda Rowe and I bought a whole heap of very unique made in Australia items such as an Aboriginal carved rain stick. Had tried to write a review of this but Trip Advisor seems to only want to review hotels, restaurants & attractions who, they can ask for marketing dollars from. Hopefully it does not go too far down this track or I may have to find somewhere else to share my reviews.

my friends and I travelled here not expecting much in this town as we had been told in cairns it was very quiet. We had the best time! The sovereign is the most beautiful place to stay, it would fit in in any popular resort town in Oz, only the benefit is that it is in quiet cooktown! The food was outstanding in both the balcony restaurant and the downstairs bar area, and the pool is AMAZING! All in all it is a super place to getaway! We'll be coming back

Only place to stay in Cooktown. our studio had everything we needed and was very comfortable. The upstairs restaurant is a spectacular space and the food was better than we expected in a small town. there is also cheaper food available in the downstairs bar (where the locals go) Pool and surrounds a standout

The Sovereign Resort is just about the only option to stay in town. Really glad we visited Cooktown but it is a very quiet town and on arrival early on a Saturday evening Reception was closed, followed by the restaurant (due to a wedding), followed by missing breakfast at 0935 & nearly missing dinner (until they heard me mutter 'I don't believe it'!) at 10 to 8 that evening. However it is a very scenic & historic town & the excellent Cooktown Museum is worth a visit. If you are visiting Cooktown, then the Sovereign is a perfectly o.k. place to stay.

It was perhaps the luck of the draw. On check in, after a long but very interesting drive up from Cairns along the Bloomfield Track, we were were told that the restaurant would be closed as the hotel was hosting a wedding party. That was no problem - we ate in '1770' nearby - but the wedding was - until we dropped off to a proper sleep at 4.30 a.m.

Old and wrinkly we're not but the raucous partying was too much even for us, two broad minded Brits who are not easily upset. We put our point of view across to the management next morning and they completely understood our pain - handling the complaint well and more than fairly rebating that night's accommodation when we subsequently settled up.

Sadly we then missed the cut-off for breakfast and despite explaining about our broken night's sleep were pointed in the direction of a local cafe where we were able to sit in the sunshine with a coffee, OJ and cereal. After a full day around Cooktown we narrowly missed being starved for supper on night two as, having checked the restaurant times in the morning and arriving in good time, we were dismayed to be told that the kitchen had just closed!

Happily, the kitchen was persuaded to 'just open' just for us and to give the chef his due, the food was nicely prepared and of very good quality - worth making a fuss for! The final nail for us in our stay was a lunchtime swim that wasn't. With an hour or two to spare we settled around the nicely situated pool to spot, after a few minutes lazing, a maintenance man cleaning the leaves out then to cast handfulls of granules into the water. 'Can we swim?' - 'Not for an hour or so' came the response. Pity.

So, our stay at the Sovereign Resort was for me 'average' when on a different few days it could have easily been 'very good'. As we understood it we were at the end of the season and it was quiet, hence the wedding party closing the restaurant and the early closing for supper and perhaps breakfast. Perhaps with a little advance communication we could have made sure we were 'on time' as we fully understand that hotels need to run efficiently and for the majority.

The room we had was good for the time we needed it, clean and tidy with a smart bathroom and adequate furnishing. A stronger wi-fi signal would be helpful but apart from that we had no complaints.

There isn't much competition in Cooktown and it was very quiet; other places were closed too but we liked the broad streets of this gold-rush town, its history (and the excellent Cook Museum) and its views over the Endeavour river. Undoubtedly the Sovereign is the place to stay, it's smart in its surroundings and the reception staff were pleasant and helpful.

I wish we could re-cast the dice and arrive on a different day. Who knows.

I attended a wedding at the resort on the weekend, the staff went out of their way to ensure everyone had a great time. The reception was beautiful and was a credit to the resort manager Sally who also made the stunning wedding cake. The rooms are lovely, clean and comfortable.
I highly reccomend the Sovereign to anyone who intends travelling to Cooktown and for those who want a special location for their wedding. A big thank you to Sally and Keith and all the staff.... we will be back.
