Owner description: First opened in 1970, this museum, housed in a spectacular 19th century convent building, showcases the history of Cooktown, from Cook's landing in 1770 to the more recent past. The exhibits include the original anchor and one of the cannon jettisoned from Cook's Endeavour in 1770, items from the Palmer River gold rush and personal items and stories from Cooktown's early residents, making this an unmissable part of your visit to Cooktown. The James Cook Museum is operated by the National Trust Queensland, a membership-based community organization dedicated to the promotion and care of Queensland's cultural and natural heritage.

I usually do museums in a bit of a hurry but this was truly excellent and gave such a feel of the fascinationg history of Cooktown. Do you know that at one time there were over FIFTY hotels here! Interesting aretefacts, photos & I loved the replicated sails in the main room that creaked back & forth just like on The Endeavour.

The James Cook Historical museum provides one of the most comprehensive and informative displays of local history in Australia.
The building was originally a convent and many of the artifacts held there bring a lot of nostalgic feelings to many opeople who visit.
There is certainly something for everyone there and a must see when visiting Cooktown.

Unless you Fish (I dont) You would really only go to Cooktown for the solitude and the history , and this covers the history very well . Doesnt look much from the outside , but has been well renovtaed (particularly out the back ) to provide a good explanation as to the 200+ years in Cooktown. Well worth the minor entry fee
