“memorable museum”
Reviewed April 1, 2012

Allow a couple of hours. There is so much to see and its very interesting. We took our sons there when in there late teens. They didn't want to go, so we said we'd just pop in for a few minutes...hours later we had to drag them out for dinner! We have been many times since as we always take visitors there. The Historical Society's display in the old bank building is excellent as well.

“Shipwrecked far from home”
Reviewed March 29, 2012

Located in the centre of Cooktown, the James Cook Museum has wonderful interpretive signage and displays detailing first hand accounts from the journals of Captain Cook's crew on the terrors of the shipwreck of the HMB Endeavour which led to them staying for over 2 months on the banks of the Endeavour River in 1770.
Look out for the original anchor and cannons from the Endeavour.
The museum also has displays of Aboriginal artefacts, relics from the Gold rush and a chinese section, as well as exhibitions of life in the early days of Cooktown's history.
Allow at least 2 hours to fully appreciate this National trust treasure, there is a small gift shop on site.

“Nice combination of local history and Cook related items”
Reviewed January 15, 2012

The highlight is definitely the anchor of the Endeavour recovered from the reef a few years back. The museum building is an-ex convent and is a very fine building. Definitely recomended.
