Owner description: Grassy Hill offers a 360 degree view of Cooktown, the Endeavour River and the Great Barrier Reef. Although now quite heavily forested, Grassy Hill is so known because local aboriginals deliberately burnt the forest on the hill to encourage re-growth of vegetation and draw animals to the area for hunting. The landscape you see today from the top of the hill has changed little since Captain James Cook and the crew of the HMB Endeavour climbed Grassy Hill in 1770 to view the surrounding reefs enabling him to navigate a safe passage. The views today, especially at sunset and sunrise, are still as spectacular as in 1770 making Grassy Hill one of Cooktown's most popular attractions.

This is a beautiful view from all sides, lots of plaques and interesting local information regarding land formation etc.

Loved the history of the area & reading all the names of those who helped to get this area to the standard it is. Well done.

Very well set out with a wonderfully old lighthouse and the views are amazing. You get a feeling of how remote the town really is.

From Cooktowns Main Street is a short but steep drive to the top of Grassy Hill. There's plenty of parking at the top and the top of the viewing area is accessible either by the steps or by a spiral path that is suitable for wheelchairs.
The view over Cooktown, the Endeavour River and the Coral Sea are spectacular during the day, and just as pretty at night with the lights of the town below. We had the added spectacle of fires burning in the hills from the burning off program that are undertaken at this time of the year (October). If driving up at night beware of the kangaroos and curlews that seem to be on every corner.

Great view from the top. You could see the Great Barrier reef from here. Sweet lighthouse. Worth the drive up (or walk).
