Our visit was enjoyable. The Art Galley was amazing and I am by no means an arty person. Likewise the displays of snakes and crocodile are interesting.
The amount of work that has gone into developing and maintaining the gardens is incredible.
Can't comment on the cafe as we just bought a soft drink, but after speaking to the new manager, I'd have no doubt that the meals, coffees would be great.
If you visit Cooktown and don't go here, you've missed out!

well developed gardens with history and character... a pleasant and peaceful wander at any time of the day..

nicely developed centre... could be better signposted... but nothing is hard to find in Cooktown!

The visitor centre is a beautiful building and a great resource but appears to be in a state of flux. The café was closed as was the gallery housing the wonderful Vera Scarff-Johnson botanical paintings and some of the exhibits are in need of renovation. It is nevertheless well worth a visit for the Botanic Gardens which have a magical rainforest setting and, although considerably smaller, rival some of our capital city botanical gardens . They include all the botanic specimens collected by Solander and Banks and the trees are magnificent. There is an abundance of birds and butterflies and a beautiful lilypond.

We enjoyed looking at the displays of a variety of snakes and crocodiles found in the area. The painting exhibition was also well done with some great paintings of flowers and mushrooms / toadstools.

I would avoid the café for coffee. My wife and I were given 2 lattes that were both too hot to drink and with burnt milk taste. There was absolutely no foamed milk and you could barely taste any coffee even though I asked for 2 shots.

What a wonderful opportunity going to waste. The initial investment in this important facility is not being maintained - the cafe area was closed and the exhibits need to be refreshed and better interpreted. Still worth a visit as part of a visit to the Botanic Gardens which by contrast are well curated and maintained.
