“A pleasant place to stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

I stayed several nights here. It is just a couple of minutes outside of the main part of Cooktown. The cabin was very nice and restful. My only concern is that the cooking area was very small and not stocked with some essentials that are usually present in other self-catering places I have stayed.

We loved our stay in our own little self-contained unit. Sitting on our deck with a glass of wine at the end of a day exploring and watching the sun go down worked up our appetite. We stocked up on supplies and were able to fire up the barbie in the pool/bbq area, enjoying convivial conversation with our host, Vera, and visitors from across the land and sea. Mornings we woke up to birdsong and the rustle of brush turkeys mounding and breakfasted on the deck. Fabulous!

Room Tip: The units are duplex but with excellent sound proofing so you wouldn't know you have neighbours...

Milkwood is a four to five minute drive from the centre of Cooktown in a beautiful rainforest garden setting. The self-contained cabins are a good size and well constructed with timber poles, flooring and loads of rustic charm. The absence of some creature comforts in the form of a TV larger than a breadbox is a minor consideration if you're planning on spending some time indoors, though this probably not a major issue if you're in Cooktown to see the sights and experience what the place has to offer. We highly recommend Gurrbi Aboriginal Art Tours and the 1770 restaurant for a great meal.

Milkwood is probably a better option than the main st motels and for the price represents ok value.

Thanks for your review and the nudge. The old "BreadBoxes" have been changed in to 24" flat screen LED/DVD combos much to the delight of our regular guests. Next on our list is a kitchenette upgrade. Thank you. Vera

This is such a cute property with only 6 bungalows. They are well maintained and quite basic, but the peace and quietness is just beautiful. Sitting watching the yellow-breasted sunbirds from the lounge was awesome. Thanks for another great stay. I am sure we will be back.

Wonderful spot to stay for a couple of nights
The cabin was basic but comfortable.
Sitting right on the edge of the rain forest we could hear the birds and tried to guess what call went with what bird......fun after a couple of wines on the balcony.
A cheap taxi ride into town we ate at the bowling club a couple of times. Food was inexpensive, a large menu and all tasted great.
I would certainly tell friends etc to stay here when visiting Cooktown.

My partner and I spent 3 nights at Milkwood. We had a great stay. The place was very private and in tune with nature. We left all the windows open so we could hear all the wildlife outside, which was awesome. If you are hoping for something flash and modern, this isn't the place for you. If you want a relaxing cabin in the woods, then give Milkwood a go. We enjoyed our stay.

Milkwood Lodge Rainforest Retreat sits on the outskirts of Cooktown, close enough to enjoy its benefits but just far enough away to sit and contemplate the beauty of this part of the world. We stayed for 4 nights, sitting on the balcony watching the birds and the butterflies in the early morning, venturing further afield during the day, and returning home to watch the sun set as we drank a glass of wine in the evening. Cooktown is a wonderful escape with lots to do and see. We would recommend Milkwood Lodge Rainforest Retreat as a place to stay.
