I traveled a lot of Australia after I went on Mason's Tour in Cape Tribulation but I always kept looking back on it as a no less than five star activity. Lawrence Mason was incredibly knowledgeable about the rainforest - from insects to reptiles to trees - but made our small group feel very welcome. Bar getting to see loads of wonderful creatures I particularly liked the untouched feel of a rainforest than does a fair share of tours, no guardrails or signs taking away from the experience.

exploring the Daintree Forest with a guide, no paths , just trails occasionally needing to be cleared by a machete wielding guide was a hot yet exhiilarating experience. we learnt about the forest, the fruits and flowers and the fauna. our guide lawrence was entertaining yet eduational and his passion for the area was obvious. we really enjoyed our 4hr walk into the forest, loved the tea!

We came up to Cape Tribulation at the end of our Australia trip and were looking for a tour that could do the work for us and show us around without having to do the research ourselves. We are not picky travelers at all, but the tour left us completely underwhelmed. The guide was nice but not very enthusiastic, and made us feel a bit stupid for being excited and asking questions. We did the 1/2 day waterfall tour and felt like we spent the day sitting in a 4WD. We didn't see any wildlife at all and nothing was pointed out to us, and worst of all we just felt like we wasted our last day in Australia without getting a real feel for the rainforest. It was still cool to get to do some off-roading, but that can really keep you entertained for so long. I don't understand what they charge so much for, but I guess they have enough tourists thinking that if they're paying so much for a tour it is probably worth it. I would call this a huge tourist trap and being a seasoned traveled, dissappointed that I too fell for it.

I am not sure what this review is talking about. Firstly I am unable to identify the travellers, and they have not contacted me directly. The comment that we 'felt like we spent the day sitting in a 4WD' is astounding as the tour stops for walk at Emmagen Valley and Cowie Beach, and an Indigenous Walk at Bloomfield Falls. In addition there are two lookouts, and a morning tea stop at Woobadda River. The actual driven distance is about 72kms, which can be done without stopping in two hours. If we just drove up and back the tour would have ended at 930am, when in fact it ends at closer to 1230.
The comment 'We didn't see any wildlife at all and nothing was pointed out to us' simply could not be true as all of the above stops are included specifically for pointing things out. I simply can't believe that they were dumped in each location with no commentary! Wildlife is simply that; wild and there are no guarantees that wildlife will be seen on any genuine nature tour.
The price charged is similar to other small group 4WD tours in the region of 1/2 Day duration and our prices and what is offered for the price is clearly listed in our advertising on on our website. It is dissappointing that somone would post on here without first contacting me directly.

In December my husband and I along with my parents spent 3 weeks in Australia. Our short stay in the Daintree Rainforest fell in between Christmas and New Year. Luckily I researched tours before we left as many were not running during that period. Mason's was recommended by another operator who wasn't running.

On the day, we were still eating our breakfast when Nev arrived to take us on our 4 wheel drive tour so he joined us and shared a croissant, immediately putting us at ease. As there were four of us we had the car to ourselves which was clean, air conditioned and comfortable. Nev drove brilliantly and amused us with stories of less well-prepared visitors getting stuck on hills and landing up in ditches for the night.

We saw a Cassawarie with chick; wild horses; crocs in the river and were taken on an hour long walking tour by Francis, a local Aboriginal lady who gave us a real feel for how the Aboriginal culture has evolved. I believe Masons are one of the only tours that include Francis in their trip allowing her to educate visitors but also build up a business of her own.

On our return drive we stopped for some river swimming where Nev laid out a tarpaulin with flasks of tea and delicious home-made cake and cookies from Mrs Mason. He pointed out yabbies and an eel in the creek. His knowledge about Australia and the animals and plants of the Rain Forest taught us a lot that day.

Between them, Nev and the Masons made it an extremely special and memorable day for us and we would highly recommend them.
