My Husband booked a secret weekend away and we ended up at Hilltonia, in the Settlers Cottage. Upon arrival, Anthony the host was very warm and helped keep the little details of my weekend a secret from me, which was grealty appreciated.
The property has attached B&B style rooms, and then 5 cottages. A tropical pool and full size tennis court complete the ameneties. The cottages are spaced around the bushland, to ensure privacy, which is exactly what you get.
Our cottage had a huge bed with canopy, sunken HUGE spa bath, masses of towels and robes, gas log fire, LCD TV, kitchenette with microwave, large bathroom with very large shower. Dining table for 2 and 2 massive armchairs completed the lounge area. I also appreciated the flip top coffee table, holding old trashy mags that I had time to flick through. The balcony spanded the width of the cottage, and with little table and chairs and BBQ, it faced towards the beach (a distant view)
A few hiccups on arrival - no breakfast basket in our room as advised, and the bathroom sliding door was broken, however, 1 phone call to reception (on our mobiles as the rooms have no phone) and he was quickly at our cottage, basket in hand and fixed the door.
A few things that dont quite demand the prices charged: the mattress on our bed was terrible! Maybe I've been spoilt with our new one at home, but it was hard and lumpy - felt like a bag of straw. When sitting in the spa, I noticed that our mattress was in fact 2 thin mattresses on top of each other - simply not good enough for a property of this calibre. 2 bad nights sleep and a trip to the Chiro when we got home. The BBQ on the verandah was unusable without a high pressure wash - years of baked on stuff. They could also do with a new updated outdoor set.
I would also ask the cleaners to step up their game. Behind doors, splatter in the microwave, dirty utensils etc. Also, light on the bathroom accessories - take your own bath gel if you dont like using soap. This cottage also overlooks the local tip, so while standing on the balcony admiring the views, just dont look to the right.
On the upside, the spa was amazing, the towels luxurious, the breakfast basket ample and refilled every day. The hosts also arranged a mutitude of extra's for us, lunch at a local winery, dinner at a local restuarant, an in-room massage - all lovely.
THis property is fantastic if you are visting the hot springs, as it is literally over the road. I would advise on booking private treatments and pools, as the public area was overcrowded on the day we visiting. Hundreds of people, some queuing to get into the pools, and in all shapes, sizes and varying degrees of body maintenance (read: Gorilla's in the mist!)
I would recommend this property, but maybe not the Settlers Cottage. A bit on the high $$ side too.
