Simple Italian food, in an atmosphere you might expect atop Volterra in Tuscany. italian history is evident in the fresco above the main dining space, the family history on the walls. Rosemary balls and bruschetta for entree, tuna tomato penne and spaghetti salcicce were down to earth. The view of the guy on the ride on mower mowing the front nature strip with Bundy and Coke added to the experience.

What a wonderful 'Italian' quirky experience at The Old Macaroni Factory and Lucini's Historic Cafe & Bar!

I phoned Maria's mobile and made a reservation for Friday lunch.
Open Friday, Saturday & Sunday for lunch (12-3pm) and dinner (from 6pm)
Bookings recommended on (03) 5348 4345 Mob 0404 123 153

We dined as a group of 4 outdoors under the wacky overgrown 'pergola' amongst geranium prunings, overgrown herbs and sunshine with the owner's (Maria Viola) grand children playing. Our visit was for a Friday lunch.

It was like a scene straight out of an Italian tourist brochure. The restaurant is only open on weekends from Friday lunchtime for lunch and dinner and is owned by descendents of the Lucini family (Maria and her son Matt) who owned the original macaroni factory. The food is authentic good Italian fare served with casual authenticity and does not stand on ceremony.

Lucini's opened in 2003 within the restored environment of Australia's first pasta factory, providing old fashioned service and a simple home-style menu using fresh local produce. As you walk in you see the wonderful painted ceilings which are unique. The Old Macaroni Factory is Australia's oldest Italian building established in 1859 when the Lucini brothers built a new factory and premises at 64 Main Road, Hepburn Springs. I believe you can do guided tours with Maria the owner.

Menu features breads, hearty minestrone, Italian salads, antipasto and traditional pastas including, spaghetti, fettucini, gnocchi, penne and more, matched with your choice of sauce. Two house specialities include ‘Pasta Maggiore’ an original family recipe more than 150 years old and ‘Spaghetti Vongole’ pasta for two. Old Italian styled desserts are a real favourite. They offer vegetarian and children’s menus and endeavour to cater for special dietery needs.

Lucini’s is fully licensed with a good selection of local regional wines to complement the menu.

All pasta dishes were great. Chianti wine added atmosphere. I adored the simplicty and historical nature of the venue indoors and the experience of dining in the garden at the rear of the property is unique. The fact that it was a superb January day also completed the lunch. Service was friendly and honest and conversation with the owner that went along with the service was sincere. All in all a memorable experience.

It is not commercially signposted which might put some people off going to the restaurant or even deceive people as to whether there is a restaurant! Look for this one as its a great 'must do' experience whilst in Hepburn Springs or Daylesford. The Old Macaroni Factory is a short 5 minutes drive North from Daylesford and situated at 64 Main Road on the left as you enter the Hepburn Springs township. It is a ten minute walk to Hepburn Springs Spa complex. As the restaurant is only open on Fridays and weekends the signage is not 'in your face'.

The movie 'Love's Brother' (2004) was filmed around this location. On a previous trip I saw some of the filming taking place.

I believe the menu changes regularly with specials added daily. Starters were delicious and left you wanting more. I had minestrone soup with rosemary dumplings which is a house speciality and was superb. I also chose a tuna spaghetti which was superb and I believe the chicken pasta was pretty darned good too. Tira Misu served in authentic fashion was delicious. Coffee is good.

Excellent and charming - don't miss this treat!
