“the blue room”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We stayed as a couple at 'the attic' and were overall disappointed. Far from being 'tastefully decorated' the room is awash with blue fabric and blue knick knacks as fas as the eye can see. The king bed was truly awful and the doona cover was unwashed and stained. The spa was nice, but tired and the filters had obviously not been cleaned since its last use. There were signs everywhere telling you what to and what not to do, some clearly mispelled. It was peaceful and had a calm sense about it, but not worth the money if you like a clean and decent bed. Wouldn't stay there again.

The host greeted us in her dressing gown. At 3pm. Hardly professional start. The Attic is a pleasant room, if a bit dated and tired. The bed and pillows are pretty poor. Shame about the ants in the cereal, and the bathroom light that didn't work. It's hard to justify the price.

Oh, and when we returned the key on Sunday morning, the host was in her dressing gown.

Stayed here recently. Totally agree with with Johnno & PickyWriter. The owner has a lot to learn about hospitality! The B&B was a disgrace and very overpriced. It is very poorly designed - to have a bathroom connecting kitchen and sitting/sleeping area and not even have an exhaust fan in the bathroom defies belief. Because it has two doors, the bathroom is small and cramped. The spa is quite high and is the only place to have a shower. It requires some climbing skills to get into. The overall lack of cleanliness discouraged us from even turning on the spa. Even the soap dispensers were old, refilled, dirty plastic containers.
The cleanliness overall was poor with dirty hand marks on doors and cupboards and the paintwork was chipped in many places. The interior is very overdue for painting but more than that, an architectual redesign.
Some of the crockery was unclean and we were thus annoyed to read on one of the many stuck up notices that we would be charged $25 if we left any dirty dishes. The crockery & cutlery is as one would find in most youth campsites/hostels.
On a positive note the free standing woodheater heated the unit well and there were adequate wood supplies.
When I told the owner of our disappointments I only got a cursory "I'll get the girls onto it" reply and not even an apology or expression of regret.
The cheap bottle of wine and cheap chocolates don't really compensate for the poor state of this B&B.
It made our stay in Daylesford (one of my favourite towns in Australia) quite disappointing!

Room Tip: Don't book 'The Wren'.

This is a sweet little place to stay. We stayed in the basement suite which is actually very bright and light and opens out to a small garden. It was very romantic, if not a little dated. The only real down side was that you can hear through the roof of the people up stairs; the TV, foot steps, the phone ringing, which did detract from the feeling of seclusion.

I found the experience somewhat alienating. After a cursory reception and handover of key by the owner, lasting 20 seconds, we were directed to search and find our quarters. Our cottage was dimly lit, as is usual with accommodation these days, but at least there were bedlamps (Most hotels seem to assume illiterate customers, judging by the level of lighting provided). However, we found one lamp not working, and later found the audio leads into the TV were broken, hence no sound at all.
Having pre-paid,we exited next morning. Does one check out and say goodbye? Or just disappear? We did the latter, though the owner was just next door. What happened to country hospitality?

My parents visited me from Perth in March and we stayed at Birches. I don't recommend it! It obviously hadn't been redecorated since the 1970s and everything was old, worn, dusty and faded. Spiderwebs graced the window frames and there was some dangerous cracking sticky-taped over in the bathub. None of the magazines in the room were dated post-2000!

We also felt very unwelcome - there were lots of nasty little signs about cleaning up after ourselves, and the owner was weird. It was like staying at some grumpy old Auntie's house when she's made it clear she doesn't want you to stay long and you're a huge inconvenience. If you don't like looking after people, don't run a B&B!

This place is NOT four star. I expected it to be a bit twee from the photos, but I was terribly embarrassed to bring my parents there. We laughed about it (eventually), but it really was awful. Only good thing I can say is that it was close to town.

My girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at the birches. Staying at 'the basement', we found the room very spacious while still retaining a very cozy aesthetic. Decor was warm and homely and there were chocolates and champagne waiting for us on arrival. Cat grave sites in the garden and a large huntsman spider in the barbecue were a bit off-putting, but did not deter us from having a spectacular holiday.
