“Photographers delight.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2012

If photographing mining artifacts is your forte, look no further! Ongoing work by local enthusiasts is gradually opening up more areas to the public. It's good to see historical sites being preserved so well.

“Interesting and educational glimpse of regional history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2012

When in the area in the summer season (mid May to mid September), make sure you visit the little mine museum which includes a cozy cafe and gift shop. Here you can also book one of the guided tours to the mine, which will take you through the mine site with its many industrial artifacts and buildings (all above ground as mine shafts are unsafe and cannot be accessed).
The tour is certainly more interesting than it may sound and I would recommend it for anyone, from industrial history buffs to families with kids (as long as they can walk for an hour or more). Learn about the once booming town, mining operation (1911-1955), production of coal and history of the area in general. This is great venue for photographers too with accumulation of scrap, old buildings and rusty machinery all over the place (if you are a photographer and would like to spend more time on site, full day photo tours are sometimes offered by Aurum Lodge). If you have a larger group, you can also arrange private tours like we did for a birthday party outing.
Before or after the tour, make sure you allow time for lunch or a coffee and cake at the miners cafe in the museum.

“Natural Historical Site”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2012

This is worth an afternoon to see first-hand, the huge size of this coal mining operation. My personal guess is that because of size of the facilities, the related cost to restore them and an impending safety factor, the opportunity to go through them all will be limited in the near future. So for a full experience, go now.

“Worth the trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2011

We went on the recommendations of a family member. It was well worth it. The site and the history is amazing. We went on a walking tour with two other people and our guide. It's a great place to be on a nice day and the guide let us take pictures at our own pace. Very beautiful scenery and a great historical site.
