“When can we move in?”
5 of 5 bubbles Review of Standen

Attraction details
Owner description: Nestled in the Sussex countryside with views across the High Weald, James and Margaret Beale chose an idyllic location to build their rural retreat. Designed by Philip Webb, Standen is one of the most complete examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors and a story of family life in 1925. Outside, Mrs Beales passion for gardening inspires a major restoration of her 12-acre hillside garden. Each garden room has a distinct character and offers something for every season from spring bulbs to autumn colour. Explore the wider estate with footpaths leading out into the woodlands. Close at 4pm November - January

“When can we move in?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

This house is a lovely Arts and Crafts house. Every room has so much detail. The house was build with this decor in mind and it shows. Everything just fits together. We could live there. The staff and volunteers of the National Trust were as warm, open and helpful as always.

(We are new overseas NT members)

Unfortunately we did not see much of the gardens as we did not have enough time.

“The house I would want to live in”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

Fabulous Arts and Crafts designed house in a glorious location looking over the Downs. Just perfect for a family (if a little large by today's standards).
From the purpose built billiard room to the conservatory (and the little tower play house) this building is gorgeous... and unlike many of the houses of the NT feels as if you could actually live there.
A wonderful garden on different levels - from a smooth croquet lawn to a large kitchen garden, and lots of paths up and down hill - bliss for children.

“Lovely Arts and Craft House”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2013 via mobile

Standen has some lovely features, I especially loved the sunflower room, we can't comment on the gardens as we did not have time to explore them. Not as good as some other NT properties but has its good points.

“Discovering the delights of the Arts and Crafts movement in the flesh.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

Having a fleeting awareness of the Arts and Crafts movement, I have become totally fascinated by the skills and beauty of it through my visit to this amazing west sussex home of the Beale family so full of amazing examples of the work of Philip Webb and William Morris and other members of the group. So much beauty and ornate simplicity of style in the decorations, the ceramics, the wall hangings, the furniture and the ordinary yet incredible household belongings. What a family history and what an incredible location with the gardens now being restored and re-established back to its original layout and planting. What a great revisit that will prove to be when it is finished.

“Not just William Morris but William de Morgan”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

I have visited Standen several times over the past thirty years and on this visit I realised that I had not registered how many William de Morgan ceramics there on display, many of them in not very conspicuous places. It is becoming increasingly child friendly and it was good to see so many young people enjoying the house, garden, playground and other facilities.
