Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Nestled in the Sussex countryside with views across the High Weald, James and Margaret Beale chose an idyllic location to build their rural retreat. Designed by Philip Webb, Standen is one of the most complete examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors and a story of family life in 1925. Outside, Mrs Beales passion for gardening inspires a major restoration of her 12-acre hillside garden. Each garden room has a distinct character and offers something for every season from spring bulbs to autumn colour. Explore the wider estate with footpaths leading out into the woodlands. Close at 4pm November - January

Look up at all the different chimneys: has a lovey orchard to wander in and veg gardens... grassy slopes in the sun to relax on and a walk ib the woods, lovely cafe and shops

Standen is a lovely place to visit, close to East Grinstead, it is easy to get to by car and bus. The house is great, not to large and really interesting for anyone who likes William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. The gardens are lovely and there are loads of walks nearby. The restaurant is great and well worth a visit.

National Tust owned, situated on a hill with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The garden, and forest walk are very good. Excellent facilities laid on for children during the summer holiday.

We visited Standen one chilly winter's afternoon and what a surprise. it is beautiful, the house, the grounds - just lovely. it is tucked away affording wonderful views of the Sussex countryside and the guides are so enthusiastic and well informed that the showery day day wasn't noticed by our group.
I will certainly visit again and for longer next time, and my experience has persuaded me to join the National Trust.
