“Not the greatest”
Reviewed February 8, 2013 via mobile

I visited the Stag for the first time in ages for lunch and to be honest I wasn't bowled over. It was quite expensive for what it is.

To be fair I haven't been for dinner which may be better so may give it a try one day.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review for The Stags Head. Our Menu is very extensive & ranges in price from a £3.30 Bloomer Sandwich up to £21.00 Fillet Steak with lots of variety in between. We hope you return to try again some time as unlike many establishments these days we have locally sourced produce, which is almost all cooked on the premises by one of our fully qualified chef's.

“Not the best, but not the worst.”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

Called in on a very quiet sunday eve. Had roast beef dinner, it was OK ,but tasted like it had been heated up, loads of peas, small piece of watery cauliflower and a couple of green beans. Husband had chicken and with a cream cheese sauce, plenty of it an OK. Friendly staff.

“Separate Gluten Free Menu”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

We have visited this restaurant on a few occasions now and have always found it to be excellent. Good food, Friendly Service. The atmosphere of the dining area very comfortable. We had two small children with us this time and they were well accommodated with their own menu and one of our party was gluten intolerant and this also had its own menu which made such a welcome change. We will definitely be visiting again as it is good to have such a good restaurant so close to home.

“Once good now poor”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

We have eaten in the Stags Head in the past quite a few times, the last time about 3 months ago. We decided to hold our annual family Christmas lunch there this year which meant some of our party travelling from Cornwall to join us. We told everyone the journey may be long but the food was well worth it. How wrong we were. For a Christmas lunch there were no specific table decorations ( not even cheap plastic ones) and the table crackers were not even as good as ones you could buy in a pound shop! We ate in the restaurant.
The menu choice was ok with limited vegatarian options, but in the past the veggie nut roast was good so thought that would please the 4 veggies in our party.
On the day, the food was poor, the nut roasts soft and stogie, the Turkey served in bits instead of slices that looked as if they had been picked from the bird and the trifle for desert so poor ( made from tinned fruit, tinned custard) we had to complain about it. There was a wait of around 45 minutes between the starter and main meal which we had to chase them at least 3 times for. There was insufficient coat hanging space, meaning coats were rammed on top of each other by staff frequently then falling on the floor. The service was poor and the after meal coffees included "instant" expresso which had to be sent back it was so bad. Overall a very poor experience for an expensive Christmas lunch. It was very disappointing to have chosen the Stags Head for our Christmas meal on this occasion. By the way the table was reserved 4 weeks in advance and the individual meals pre-ordered a week before the meal. We will not be eating there again

Thank you for taking the time to review The Stags Head. We endeavour to listen to feedback & learn from it & I would like to say we now have more coat hanging space available since you pointed this out for us.

I will however mention we specifically do not have tacky table decorations on purpose as this is not the image we aim for & only use fresh flower table decoration.

I can confirm the fruit is definitely not tinned & neither is the custard and the espresso is from our coffee machine...but we all make mistakes.

“Special diets catered for”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

I have had numerous lunches at The Stags Head and never been disappionted. So when we were looking for somewhere to go for a meal on Saturday evening, 4 of us including my very fussy 76 year old father. We thought we'd give it a try. When we arrived we had a drink in the bar, menu's where bought for us to look at and our orders where taken before we were shown to our table. they have seperate dairy and gluten free menus, both contain plenty of choice which makes a nice change. It was very busy and at some points the service was a bit slow but the food was superb, nicely cooked and good size portions. So i didn't mind having to wait for the bill. Even my Dad enjoyed his meal and had no complaints which is a first!!
