The horse itself is best viewed from a distance. The car park below the horse offers a steep climb up steps to the viewing point above the horse and rewards the effort with excellent views towards the Hambleton Hills and the Yorkshire Dales. Also the top of the hill has the Yorkshire Gliding Club, watch the gliders come in and out. It's a great area for short and long walks and various cafe and pub opportunities are in easy walk of the attraction. Alternatively there is an ice cream van in the car park in the Summer.

Excellent walking, amazing views, take the dogs, they'll love it. Bit of a steep drive to top of Sutton Bank, lots of lorries don't make it and cause traffic chaos, but don't let that put you off.
Either drive to White Horse via Kilburn (visit Mouseman Workshops) or via Sutton Bank..there's a charge for parking at Sutton Bank, the White Horse is free.

If you park your car at the Visitor Centre on top of Sutton Bank then walk over the road( BE EXTREMLY CAREFUL ) you can walk aiong the top of the Scar by the Gliding Club ( hopefully you wont have to duck) and have spectacular views across the Vale of York where on a clear day you can see the Early Warning station at Menwith Hill Harrogate, York Minster, and the cooling towers of Drax power station carry on round and you reach steps down to the White Horse car park
take a right turn through the gates and you will walk through the woods reaching an upward stretch which brings you back up onto the top of the scar turn left and return to the Sutton Bank car park
I would recommend sensible footware if this walk is to be undertaken and if rain is threatened a good water- proof!!
If you just wish to visit the White Horse alone check a map or Google maps and find the car park just below the attraction so you just walk up the steps to view it!
You could always leave Grandad in the car to have a snooze!!
