What a treat this place is, lots of background information to James Herriot and his life and of course the the real characters behind the stories. The house has been restored and furnished as it was when the Wight (Herriot) family lived there.

Wow! What a step back in time, loved every minute of this visit.
We spent 1.5 hours here, so much to see & read.
Especially liked the short film of Alf’s life.
Would recommend to anyone, young or old, wonderful exhibition of the bygone era.

Traveled from Carmarthen in South West wales to visit the Yorkshire vet and the Herriott museum on arrival I noticed a sign saying only guide dogs and I asked if this was a joke only to be told no dogs were not allowed not anywhere for your pets to be kept safe , while looking in the museum very disappointed as it was a vetenerian surgery we were going to see, shocking

There is so much to see and two hours just flies by. Each section has a lot of information to read. The mocked up tv set is great. The amount of detail and equipment is amazing even if you are not inclined towards vetinary stuff. There is a brilliant kids section where they can operate all kinds of games and gain very useful facts about animals etc.

This exhibition succeeds in telling the story of the real James Herriot, J Alfred Wight, vet and author of the Herriot series of novels. Wight's house in Thisk is the venue and the extensive rooms are displayed as they were when he lived and worked there. A cinema in a re-creation of an animal byer tells his story from his birth in Sunderland to joining the growing Sinclair veterinary practice in Thirsk. There are extensive displays of veterinary instruments used to treat the various animals encountered in a country practice. The TV series, "All Creatures Great and Small" features extensively with a section dedicated to sets similar to the ones used in filming that series. There is also a brief section about the advances in veterinary medicine since the days of Alf Wight. Children are catered for with a whole room containing interactive hands-on units that aim to educate them about animals and their care. Well worth a visit.
