My wife and I have long been regulars at the fleece it has always been a favourite for a meal or just a drink. However since the revamp of the bar area it has moved up that extra gear. The decor is great it has a warm friendly pub atmosphere and the food is even better, try the sharing board starter or the home made burger in a brioche bun in fact it’s all good and we should know I think we have tried everything on the menu. The staff could not be friendlier, well done Jo didn't think you could make it better but you have.

The second time we have stayed at this hotel, and just as good as the first. Everyone is so polite and friendly, nothing too much trouble. Our room was in the mews, not in the main hotel, and was delightful. Lovely bathroom, comfy bed and very quiet.

We dined in the restaurant on our second night and the food was faultless, superb presentation, tasty, and excellent service. Lovely ambience. Our two breakfasts were lovely as well.

If I had to nit pick, it would be to say that it is the first hotel I have stayed in where there was no phone In the room, surprisingly when the room is not in the main hotel, and also for some strange reason, poached eggs are not available on a Sunday!!! Only fried or scrambled, no reason given. A shame when I had the most perfect one the day before!

All said, it's a fantastic place, lovely open fire, cosy lounge and superb staff who are a credit to the owners!

A great little historic hotel. Stayed on my own for a few days as part of a Yorkshire holiday. Was made to feel very welcome on arrival. I had chosen the cheapest mews room and it was perfectly pleasant - nicely proportioned and well equipped. Not high end but perfectly adequate with a great shower (the main thing I look for!) The restaurant food was great, and very reasonable. Bar was comfortable with a warm fire though I can imagine this getting busy at more hectic times.

A few times in my visit I mentioned to people around Thirsk where I was staying and I got a positive reaction! It seems a lot of locals use it as a dinner or event location.

What was really nice is that it is right on the market square so easy to walk to any of the nearby pubs, restaurants, shops etc. Car parking was fine with their own car park around the back, someone else on tripadvisor has said this can get busy but whilst I was there I had no problems. In fact, the only negatives I can find are really picking at straws so I won't bother recounting them. Definitely will return and would recommend.

We stayed just after new year for a few nights. James , Chloe and Faye cannot do enough for you. We had called in previously for meals and loved the place. Rooms comfy, food good. Good value. Relaxing break. The market setting up can be noisy if you have a room at the front, however this was only one night and spacious comy room more than makes up for this. Well recomended and we will return. We have returned for a meal and were tempted to stay, only we had work early the next day. Gary and debs tyne and wear

We stayed here on a Sunday night before doing some sporting locally, having visited our son at Newcastle. We had a warm welcome and liked the room. Quite an antiquated bathroom in room 8, but of a large size and fine by us. There was a nice atmosphere in the bar and, despite arriving quite late, they prepared some nice sandwiches (not the cheapest in the world) without fuss. There is a big car park round the back where you felt your vehicle was very safe. Real value for money.

Had a wonderful stay at the Golden Fleece and enjoyed the great atmosphere in this old coaching inn.
The staff were friendly and professional giving us excellent service.
We enjoyed dinner in the Highflyer restaurant each night and the Chef created meals of the highest order and quality.
We had room 14 on the front of the hotel and found the accommodation to be superb with great views over the Market Place.
If you want to stay in a hotel with charm and character the Golden Fleece is the place to visit.

Room Tip: The rooms on the front have a view over the market place.
