“Simply the worst!”
Reviewed July 12, 2013 via mobile

Usually I am a fan of wetherspoons pubs and hotels. Lets face it they are usually great value for money. But unfortunately the three tuns in Thirsk is the exception. We stayed during the mini heat wave in july 2013 and were given a room on the top floor, which had stairs that first went round two tight corners then up and then down again, which made getting the suitcase to the room a bloody nightmare. There was a lift but this only negated part of the maze of stairs. This room turned out to have no air conditioning and even worse it only had one window which you could open to let fresh air in, and this only opened a tiny amount, no more than three inches high and three foot long. Subsequently the room was like an oven, realy unbearably hot.
Also the food in the restaurant seemed to be the most flavourless I have ever had in a weatherspoons. Beefburgers which are usually very flavourful, tasted bland. Bacon rolls were served up with the bacon barely cooked and totally lacking in flavour. Even their best Aberdeen Angus steak just did not have the taste it usually does when purchased at other pubs on the weatherspoons chain. In the end we gave up on them and started to eat at the little 3 just around the corner, where although more expensive the food was vastly superior. All in all I definitely would not eat at the three tuns again, and probably would not stay there over night.

We were meant to be staying at Hawnby near Hemsley however got stuck in the snow :(. We backtracked to Thirsk and thankfully they had rooms available here. Rooms were better than I expected for the price paid and in the morning, could just walk downstairs for a cheap and cheerful breakfast. Had our evening meal and a well deserved bottle of wine here also. People might knock Wetherspoons but on a wintry evening and in desperate need of a bed, it was the best place ever!

A 17th century building that has been modernised without losing it's character (mind your head if you're over 6ft).
Spacious rooms with a really comfy bed and refreshingly powerful drench shower.
We booked at 6pm for that evening and still found a room for under £50.
The town in the evening is lovely with the church lit up and a pleasant river path.
The food is cheap and cheerful but delivered quickly by pleasant waitresses. We had an evening meal and breakast and though tasty just wish the meals were a bit hotter.
Overall though a great stay and we've resolved to come back soon and spend a few more nights using this hotel as a base to explore Herriot country and the East coast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front as no view from bedrooms at the back.

Stayed for 1 night on 30th march and it was brill. Large room, lovely and clean. Very quiet once in room which surprised me very much so slept fine, just a trip downstairs for breakfast which was cheap and tasty. Would certainly stay again for price and the staff were extremely friendly.

We booked this hotel on the recommendation of a family member who lives in Thirsk and booked it well in advance one evening via the duty manager at the end of January because we were going to a family celebration at the end of March and needed a family room.

When we arrived after a long and tiring drive from Staffordshire, we were told that they'd lost our booking and we had nowhere to stay, so we booked in at Kirkgate House instead at extra cost, which fortunately still had a large enough room free.

Although we were offered a complimentary stay on another day and they offered us a free meal, we did feel very badly let down.

A great stay! Room above the pub, all quiet by 11.30pm. Massive family room, £50 for the night, breakfast £3 each. Perfect for us! It's what you would expect, bit noisy in evening but right on the square in thirsk and really helpful staff. Not a boutique couples hotel but a bargain and a step up from travelodge for similar cost.
