A bonus Sunday night stay: Lovely room no 17, stunning enormous bathroom, comfy bed and quiet. Had dinner in the restaurant and thought the food excellent and the service a bit... patchy. Breakfast was good; served in a fabulous airy room (it's so often not). All in all, with dinner bed and breakfast included, pretty good value. We really enjoyed it and felt very relaxed when we checked out.

We were so excited to have a 'childless' week-end away, and courtesy of Mr & Mrs Smith vouchers given by friends. Having booked the room online, I telephoned the hotel direct to book the restaurant and spa treatments. On arrival, having driven four hours on Valentine's night, through rain and gales, we were told that they had no record of the table reservations. They did manage to 'squeeze' us in, in a side room to the main restaurant but immediately we were irritated. Our room was very pretty, but not the one we had requested when booking.
The hotel was nice, food was delicious but the service was shambolic, except for the lovely young lady on reception. On Saturday night I ordered lemon sole and was served skate, and had to persuade the staff that it wasn't lemon sole, which having checked with the kitchen they confirmed.....a mistake that a chef couldn't possible make...having said that it was delicious. Our breakfast in our room was brought (both mornings) without any butter or jams for the croissant, milk or sugar for the tea, and no condiments, salt or pepper for the cooked breakfast. It lacked thought and thoroughness. Having paid £500 for a two night stay we expected better service, and a little more luxury and less penny pinching from the hotel, but it is a great location and has enormous potential. It is very odd to pay the amount we paid and not have any staff located in the building, and with no mini bar. Someone had tea in the drawing room, and the dirty cups were stil laid out at 10pm that night. We had a good time in spite of a slight 'Fawlty Towers' feel.

We've eaten here several times, and it's a place with great atmosphere, but our most recent Saturday lunchtime visit with two guests for a light lunch for four frankly confirmed our fears that standards are slipping. For £44, we expected something really decent, but we didn't get it.
Coffee was ordered for four - only one pot for two arrived, and it was plonked in front of us. There was no hot milk - we had to ask for it. It arrived for two - again not for four.
A ploughman's platter arrived without any bread, a fundamental component - it also had to be asked for. This meal, along with three just OK ham sandwiches, was accompanied by a pile of bland leaf salad, with the hallmarks of coming from an Asda catering pack (how about a slice tomato?, cucumber? cress? dressing?), Also, the cleanliess of the toilets is not quite what it used to be.
This review may sound like a rant, but everything lacked care and attention. Come on, you have a high reputation, and we know you can do better than this. Response please.

Just returned after a wonderful stay at this lovely, welcoming hotel. Arrived at 3.00 pm and had a few drinks by the log fire in the bar - dogs were also welcome. Stayed in room 74, one of the divine rooms, and couldn't fault the decor or comfort. Beautiful bathroom with large bath and walk in shower. Would have been a nice touch to have a complimentary rose or chocolates on arrival as many of the hotels do for valentine's day. Not particularly good TV reception and WiFi was very hit and miss but not a problem as we were only there for one night and wanted a complete break.
Dinner was superb, one of the best meals we've ever had. We had the shared seafood platter for starters which was amazing, followed by the calves liver and steak and chocolate fondant and treacle tart for dessert.
The staff were wonderful and extremely attentive throughout our stay. Special thanks to our waiter Josh who couldn't do enough for us, even remembering us the next morning when we relaxed with our papers in the cosy sitting area after breakfast.
Not something you could do regularly as this hotel is not cheap but, in our opinion, worth every penny. Didn't want to leave and we will certainly be back.

Just returned from a lunchtime meal at The Hoste. I was so looking forward to a Birthday meal here after reading all the excellent reviews on Trip Adviser, but was very disappointed. We ordered the chicken liver pate for starters and had to ask a nearby waitress for some butter as none came for the toasted sourbread (which my husband said was disappointing as there was only one piece of bread for £7.00!). For mains my husband had ordered the seared salmon and I had ordered the cod in beer batter. My husbands was brought to the table and the waiter just smiled at me. I didn't like to say well where's my cod? After a few minutes I told my husband to start eating his as it would go cold. After a few more minutes I
managed to catch the attention of a waitress to ask where my main course was? She apologised saying she didn't know what had happened and went and fetched my main. Neither of our mains were nothing special (costing £16 and £14 each we expected more. I have had much better cod & chips from a small cafe in Hunstanton costing less than half the price!). We both felt, however, the worst part of the meal was having to share it with dogs! The couple opposite us had a dog at the table which kept whinning and the owners kept feeding it food off their plates. Not being a dog owner I find this disgusting! Also when a waitress dropped a bowl of chips on the floor, another dog came and ate them out of her hand as she was trying to clear them up! Admittedly she was as stocked as we were. But what are the management doing allowing dogs to be in the area where people are eating? Not only allowing but encouraging as both owners were brought bowls of water for their dogs at the table. Unbelievable! Is it because we were in Burnham Market and everyone there has dogs so the management has to pander to them? Or is this what eating out is like nowadays? Sorry, but not everybody loves dogs, especially when eating. If this is now the norm then I for one will not be eating out in the future, and especially here at The Hoste. Very disappointing.

Honestly the best hotel we have ever stayed in. The room was beautiful (loved the 'Happy Birthday' special touch), the food was amazing, the wine was excellent, the service was first rate - cant fault it at all. We had the most amazing massages at the spa, this is a truly special place I'm hoping we can visit again soon.

Superb stay. It's a couple of years since we have been and it could not have been better. We had an excellent room. We had dinner on our first night and it seemed to us the restaurant had upped its standard. Breakfast was also very good. Staff were very helpful and friendly. We also loved the seating area been able to lounge around in very comfortable arm chairs - with the staff always willing to help. It seems to have transitioned very well under the new management.
Hope to be back!
