This hotel enjoys a charming location in Burnham Market, a very cute Georgian village with a number of tempting shops and easy access to the coast and the beautiful beach at Holkham. Ideal for a romantic weekend. We stayed in the Vine House (opposite the main hotel). The room was stylish and unique (a true boutique hotel experience) with luxe features. Quality bed linen and feather duvet/pillows, tea and coffee facilities, fresh milk in the mini-fridge and even wine glasses and a corkscrew, all added to the relaxation factor. (There is a very good wine merchant in the village.) We stayed in room 54 which has a fairly small bedroom but the benefit of a mini lounge area in the attic above (and a very high ceiling above the bed going up into the roof) and a view over the village. The Vine House also has a number of charming period lounges in which to relax. The only downside is that the front door requires a good slam to shut and a good push to open - as a result we were woken by late revellers and early risers. My main quibble with the hotel is the lack of organisation/service. This is not to say that many individual staff members were not friendly and helpful - they were - but there was no sense that anyone was in charge overall or taking a general interest in whether guests were being properly taken care of during their stay. No one recognised us from one day to the next (except one lovely waitress). Following the loss of its previous owner, the hotel needs its new owners or general manager to take on more of a visible "host" role and a better system of organisation throughout.
The restaurant is acceptable but somewhat overpriced. The quality of the cooking is broadly good but does not reach the standards suggested by the complex menu and prices. Go for the simple options such as fresh local seafood. There is a good wine list (especially good French wine selection). Again, organisation was lacking and while some servers were very engaging and efficient, others were a little over-relaxed, occasionally bordering on off-hand.
Overall this is a comfortable and stylish retreat which I would definitely recommend - but I hope to see evidence of a new guiding personality filling the former owner's place on my next visit,

Could be somewhere great but seems a bit neglected. Stayed in junior suite which was a good size and nicely deocorated however the bathroom didn't have a shower, only a basic bath - no warning given of this when I booked or was given the room.

The staff running the hotel are junior and whilst are friendly and polite they lack the attention to detail you'd expect and there's little organisation amongst any of them.

The restaurant is very popular, however again lacked management of the staff. Table wasn't ready for our booking at 8.30pm and we didn't eat until nearer 9.30pm as a result. Needs a strong restaurant manager to coordinate the staff. Food was only ok.

On a positive note the spa treatments were very good.

Room Tip: Check the bathroom facilities when booking.

Although the food and staff were exceptional, unfortunately the whole dining experience for a special occasion was ruined by outside influence, otherwise this review would have been 5 stars.
On arrival we were shown to a lovely window table and looked after by a charming waitress who took our food and wine orders and we thoroughly enjoyed our starters.
At this point the evening started to go downhill, when an all male golfing party started to occupy the adjoining table and one of the party commented 'you will regret sitting there'.
How true were those words as they progressively got louder, to such an extent that part way through the main course we asked to be moved to a quieter table.
The waitress obliged and we moved into the adjoining room and continued to enjoy our meal.
The group in question however grew louder as more alcohol was consumed and proceeded to burst into song much to the annoyance of other diners.
The staff were suitably embarrassed and at this point we requested that we see the manager who endeavoured to calm the situation and suggested we took our sweets and coffees in the lounge area and tried to compensate with complimentary glass of champagne.
It was commented that they would not have taken the group booking if they had been aware of the all male party, who endeavoured to make matters worse with their schoolboy antics in attempts at trying to flood the gents washroom by blocking sinks with paper towels and placing pint glasses in the urinals.
The staff were all full of apology and did their best to alleviate a difficult situation and were a credit to The Hoste Arms, however I just wonder if other diners comforts were being sacrificed for a party obviously spending a significant amount with them.

So looking forward to our much need break. Room well appointed but very small. Horrid cooking smell spoiled our lunch and awful table and very poor service didn't improve our dinner experience. Second day was better but not up to our previous experiences of what was a favourite hotel.
