“A great place to stay”
Reviewed July 25, 2014 via mobile

Spent a very comfortable night at the Red Lion Hotel, on a recent visit to Matlock Bath. Great nights sleep and excellent food and drink served in the bar. The fresh stone baked pizzas were to die for as was the excellent breakfast in the morning. Certainly good value for money and we would definitely stay there again the next time we visit that area.

We stayed here over night on 21st June 2014. 1st impressions were very good but we were not sure where to check in, this happened to be at the bar but there was nothing to tell you that. We were shown to room 6 and told where we needed to go for breakfast. About 2 minutes after we arrived in the room we had a knock on the door asking us if we would be prepared to move hotels as they had double booked, we didn't move though as we had booked our room a couple of months in advance.
The room was nice and clean, the en suite was very small and usually have a bigger bathroom in a caravan! We had an extractor fan opposite our bedroom window which was very noisy and kept us awake during the night!
We went for breakfast Sunday morning and although the girl serving was very nice there didn't seem much organisation and we were left waiting around.
We had to ask where to check out as there is no check in area and were told to go to the breakfast room. We paid for our stay but at no point were we asked if everything was ok!!
This is a nice enough place but not somewhere I'd really rave on about to anyone.
Outside our room was the smoking shelter so not only did we have our room smelling of smoke but about 10 o'clock it seemed lots of young people sat out there drinking so it was really noisy.
I was glad we only stopped for 1 night!
On the plus side, the food was really nice.

Room Tip: Do not stop in room 6!!!

We have just held our wedding ceremony here this weekend, Peter and Christine couldn't have been more helpful :) The function room looked amazing, they got in a special perry we requested for the drinks, pizzas came out right on time and were gorgeous. Everything was just as we'd planned it and Christine and Peter and all the staff there were smiley and friendly...just great really and at a realistic price too! Top marks to everyone involved - I would whole heartedly recommend as a wedding ceremony venue, great for pizza canapés or a whole pizza receptions too if that what you fancy! (They also do other food and sit down meals in the function room)
Info: we had about 90-95 in the function room all seated for the ceremony, this worked really well, then drinks in the bar afterwards. The function room can also be turned around for a full sit down meal upstairs, (but we were heading off for pies in a field!) 10 pizzas, a few baskets of chips and a few nibbles on the bar, seemed to work well as a good sized nibble :)
Overall a fab 'real' non pretentious venue on the edge of the Peak District, just what we wanted :)

We stayed here on Sunday night after a trip on the Ecclesbourne railway. We found the landlord and landlady very friendly and helpful as were the locals. Our room was spacious and comfortable and very clean. This is a very old inn so everything is very quaint and higgledy piggledy. Our breakfast was very good, freshly cooked to order. We would definitely go back again if we were in the area. Very good value for money.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the market place.

As said by someone before, outside the rooms is a favourite spot for the local young drinkers to hang out in the smoking shed and chat until gone 1am. When I complained in the bar at gone midnight I was told this was ok as they were drinking up so this was ok.
The owners wife was not in any way helpful so I had to intervene to ask people to leave or move form outside our window which didnt shut so we had o way to keep the noise out.
The rooms as they are dont work alongside this being a local drinking haunt for the youths of wirksworth, or indeed for running 21st parties as happened when we were there.
I should add I live in manchester city centre so Im hardly a light sleeper, but we had no chance of getting to sleep before 1am which is not good enough.
I would 100% not recommend you to stay here, there are lots of alternatives in the village. The food was ok and the beer good til the best ale ran out so you would be better self catering and just eating at this pub.

We had a fab time at the red lion, perfectly situated for a walking and cycling weekend with plenty of choice of pubs for a drink before dining in the red lion. Staff extremely friendly and helpful, even storing our bikes overnight in a safe place. Rooms clean spacious and comfy bed although looking a little tired could do with a bit of a make over, but perfectly adequate for what we wanted. Would visit again for friendliness and location.

The Red Lion is right in the centre of Wirksworth opposite the market square. It dates from at least the 1700's and still has the arch where coaches entered. (It now leads to the car park.) Our room was spacious with a comfortable bed and the usual hotel facilities. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The pub downstairs was traditional with the usual range of drinks including very good ale.

Breakfast was taken in the "Lion's Den", the other side of the arch, with a range of freshly cooked dishes available. I tried the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, which I can definitely recommend.

All in all, a fine example of an old coaching inn with modern touches, without losing the ambience of the past. We found that booking directly with the pub saved money compared with using an agency.

Room Tip: Room 1 (our room) had a good view of the market square. Other rooms might be quieter.
