We stayed for two nights at the Old Lock Up and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The made to order full english breakfasts are fantastic (proper sausages and black pudding. The rooms are lovely with some great antique furniture to catch the eye. Showers could do with improving as they aren't particularly powerful. Tim (the owner) was very helpful throughout the whole stay, recommending a cracking walking, organising champagne in the room for our arrival ( it was a romantic getaway), and cooking up a awesome 3 course dinner in which he served a great chocolate dessert at our request. I left my phone charger there and he even posted it back to me, lovely chap, great place to stay!

We stayed in the Old Lockup for two nights. Tim is an excellent host and his breakfast was really delicious. But what I really can recommend is the 3 course dinner. Self made bread with bruscetta was really great, same applies for the sea bass with mashed potatoes and vegetabels and finally the pavlova was the overall kick.

We had a good time in Wriksworth rooms are lovely decorated.

Overall this was a good bank holiday weekend in the Old Lockup!

Tim, who runs the place, is extremely efficient, and and excellent cook to boot! I started with that, because a lot of what makes the Old Lockup so lovely are due to Tim's attention to detail and the little comforts that make a place special, clean space, great food and a nice box of chocolates when we arrived.

The B&B itself is styled after an old Lock up - we were somewhat deceived by the 'Police' sign at the entrance and realised a few minutes later that we are expected to ring the bell. Old photos, uniforms, handcuffs and paintings from the era are all around the house. We stayed at the Hayloft, which ticked all the boxes - spotlessly clean, quiet and a lot of sunlight late into the evening and early in the morning. Tim also made up the rooms every day.

Breakfast was amazing, and the 3 course dinner was AMAZING, especially after a day spent outdoors hiking through the Peak District. Tim was kind enough to share his recipes and we're going to try to recreate the lovely marshmellow-textured pavlova! Between us, we had the bruschetta, seafood cocktail, lamb shank, sea bass and the pavlova - all well flavoured, beautifully cooked food. Overall, lovely place to spend the weekend and looking forward to spending another few days over when we're back in the peak district!

Room Tip: We stayed at the Hayloft - quiet and clean, nice sunlight in the morning and evening. If you are sen...

Nice clean and tidy accommodation, themed around an old police lock up. Tim the proprietor is friendly and welcoming, there when you need him. Ideally situated for travel around Derbyshire. We opted for the magistrates room and found it to be cosy and comfortable. There is a nice little self catering unit in the old carriage shed which looked nice and contained everything you'd need should you wish to do your own thing. Tim catered for lactose intolerance and a vegetarian and offers home cooked evening meals with advanced notice. Parking.... There is on site parking which could get quite cramped during busy periods; leaving you with on-road 1hr no return parking on all days except Sunday (unless you get lucky with the open space opposite, which appears to be used by locals so it was difficult to find a space)

I read a comment somewhere about road noise. Honestly, there's hardly any traffic in the area, especially late at night so I can't see what the fuss is about. It certainly wasn't an issue for us.

We didn't get to use the spa bath as we forgot about it! There was also a small bar facility and i suspect Tim might try and slip in some live music should the mood require it :)

Had a great weekend break & highly recommend this place if you fancy a visit to a lovely part of the UK.

Room Tip: can recommend the magistrates room

From the moment we first made contact until our departure the level of service provided by Tim was nothing short of outstanding. The attention to detail was superb and all from a man who single handedly does everything! The chocolates on the pillow were the icing on the cake. Anyone wishing a relaxing break with great food and service look no further.

I went with my 6yr old son, hoping to see the ghost...! Well that was part of it, we were going to Gullivers World the following day which is 10 min drive. Tim was pleasant and couldn't be more helpful. We stayed in the coach house which is a pleasant annexe over looking the graveyard...which my son thought would be the best place to see ghosts...We didnt capture any ghosts, but the room was lovely and clean and the little quirks like box of chocolates and cookies was nice. The ensuite was a bit tight but I am over 6' so suitable for average sizes! Lovely breakfast and a totally enjoyable night.

I'll confess that given a choice between a big corporate hotel and a boutique hotel or B&B, I'm unequivocally with the former. I like the anonymity of the 1000-room type place, and nothing fills me with horror more than comments like "Doris and Jim make you feel completely at home, and they're happy to share the family photographs while they cook a home-made pie."

However, Wirksworth doesn't have a Marriott or Hilton - so I booked the Old Lockup without high expectations and with the worry that the Tim mentioned in the reviews might be one of those intrusive hosts.

In fact, he - and the whole place - are a complete delight. The room I had was beautifully clean and well-appointed - with a jar of chocolate chip cookies and a bowl of fresh fruit. I'd have happily stayed there for some days as opposed to the fleeting overnight visit because The Old Lockup has real character and charm.

Breakfast showed the place at its best: really one of the nicest I've had anywhere, with a particular commendation for the home-made bread that produces delicious toast. Tim handles it all on his own with great skill, and is there when needed - but equally content to let you find your own way if that suits you best.

So I couldn't recommend this more highly as a place to stay in Wirksworth and as a Derbyshire base. Tim deserves every success with his enterprise.
