I booked a group trip, to include a “light” lunch for an RAF reunion afternoon outing prior to an evening dinner. I could just say excellent, but that would not do justice to this outing.
We boarded at Duffield, to be shown to our carriage, which was laid with clean linen and silver. We started with a glass of fresh orange, then the lunch arrived, a wonderful assortment of ploughmans, quiche pork pie and salad. EACH. Far more than any of us expected, but so appreciated. A wonderful scenic trip up to Wirksworth while we were eating. For those who wanted, there was a short trip on the steam train, and then the return journey whilst being served with tea and coffee.

I cannot recommend and praise this railway enough.

We went for a ride on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway when we wer ein the area during August 2018. We started at Duffield, wher eht eman and woman in the ticket office were super friendly and seemed excellent ambassadors for the railway.

We thought the journey itself was pleasant rather than stunning, but that's the case with many of the heritage railways that I've visited. It's the whole experience that counts for me, rather than one particular aspect, such as what I can see through the window.

Both of us thought Wirksworth station was a fascinating place. I hope that the appeal for funds to erect a new station building is successful, because as it is now, the station is not that attractive, unfortunately.

However, this was where we embarked on the brake van ride up to the branch to Ravenscar, which was fascinating and the high point of the day. We learnt an awful lot about the quarrying thanks to the enthusiasm of the volunteer who acompanied us. His story about the demolition of some large conveyor belts was excellent.

The railway is well worth a visit if you enjoy heritage railways. The staff we encountered were fantastic. I think they could do a slightly better job of labelling which carriages are reserved for groups, though.

The railway is obviously the result of hard work and dedication of many people, but it run through some nice but not exceptional countryside. We ride in an electric rail car which (again) was a pleasant experience, but not exceptional. Perhaps we have been spoilt by the superb countryside that exists in other parts of the Peak District.

Dear Dave A,

Thank you for submitting a review of our railway. Vistas are there to behold and are subjective in nature. At this time of year the colours of the Ecclesbourne Valley can change daily and are a joy to behold but accept they may not be '... exceptional...' to everyone. Thank you for mentioning the hard work of our volunteers. We are very lucky to have such a good collection of dedicated people supporting our venture.

Just as a point of accuracy we don't have any electric rail cars in our fleet.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write a review of your experience on our railway.

Regards,

Good to be on a working train journey linking up with the main line.Interesting to see how they cope with gates ,walkers and trees on line.

We visited Ecelesbourne rail on Derbyshire day, This trip was available through Radio Derby and tickets supplied free. We got there early plenty of parking. As we had free tickets we used the buffet car on the station for drinks and a snack. Unfortunately the drinks not that good, Hot chocolate weak and Luke warm but cakes very nice. The train ride it’s self really split in two for us first half mainly trees not much to see, second part on the way to Duffield much more open nice views. It was nice to get the swaying in and bump ride you used too get train ride ago. Also little annoying having to stop and start when opening and shutting rail crossing gates. Had 20 minutes at Duffield station small cafe gift shop.

Dear davestretton,

We are glad you enjoyed your free ride down the valley. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is one of two remaining heritage railways in the UK which are 'complete branch lines' and we aim to recreate the rural branch line experience therefore it was not uncommon to have to stop at the occasional unmanned crossing gate.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review of our railway and we do hope you will visit us again in the near future.

Wirksworth really is a beautiful ancient Derbryshire Dales/Peak District Town. Lovely Pubs, cafe's and restaurants, a fabulous boutique cinema, the two week 'Wirksworth Festival' and of course the excellent Ecclesbourne Railway experience. I'm told Wirksworth has excellent schools as well so I may even move there... its that good!

We took the Ecclesbourne Valley’s Steam Train from Wirksworth to Duffield, then back again. We arrived at Wirksworth in plenty of time to buy our tickets, see some of goings on at the station, and to get some refreshments for the journey. There are two level crossing on the route that train has to stop for, open gates, move through, stop and close gates, then continue on journey – this (for me) took away some of the enjoyment of the ride.

However, this was a very enjoyable couple of hours. Free car parking was available at Wirksworth station, but do arrive early as spaces were limited.

The railway publishes their services on a daily basis in Facebook. First visit and the staff were obviously very passionate about the railway and could not do enough to make our visit very pleasant. We were encouraged to walk their yard and visit their maintenance facility. Whilst taking refreshments in the buffet we were offered books to read about the railway. The train to Duffield was exciting and we won't hesitate in returning next year. It became quite apparent that some of the staff were from a disillusioned Peak Rail.

We had a lovely day out, we came with my three children and my elderly mother in law. We needed a ramp to help my mother in law board the train and this was easily obtained and the staff were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back, hopefully for some of the Christmas activities.
