We love Winster, and this is our fourth visit, but the first time staying at The Croft. Most of the cottages in Winster are quite small, especially if you have dogs, so it was great that the downstairs of the cottage was well set up with a spacious kitchen, sun room and cosy lounge giving plenty of space for the whole family.
After unloading the car we found it easier to park at the top of the village as parking and turning in the space outside the cottage wasn't easy. This wasn't a problem at all as parking was only a short walk away.
Two of the most important things we look for in a holiday cottage are comfortable beds, and a good shower. The Croft had both of these, and with the addition of the peace and quiet of the village we all slept well.
The one thing that most holiday cottages also have is blunt kitchen knives - The Croft was no different. We have rarely found a holiday let with sharp knives! The addition to a knife sharpener to the kitchen drawer would make a huge difference as it would mean guests could sharpen the knives as required.
We would have liked to have had a wardrobe in one of the bedrooms as hanging space was a little limited. It was only a minor problem for us as we were only staying for a short break - perhaps it would be more of a problem if you're staying longer.
All in all we had a lovely stay in Winster and will certainly be back again at The Croft.
The cottage is well laid out and comfortable with most of everything you need for a relaxing break.
It is also in a great location for walking with or without a dog.
We visited in October Half Term and accommodation worked well for us all (2 adults + 2 teens + our faithful friend).
However, on the downside, the approach to this property is hazardous (very narrow winding lane leading up to property) and there is very little space to turn once at The Croft. There is also limited parking and although we parked in allocated space we were still blocked in. This was not a problem for us as we tended to be on foot.
There is a large car park at The Green at the rear of the property once you have unloaded.
The Croft is in need of some TLC in terms of cleaning.
Some boot storage would be very useful so muddy boots and shoes could be stored out of the way.
We visited both pubs nearby, The Old Bowling Green is very welcoming , however, only serves food from Thurs-Sat and Sun lunch (even in half term holidays).
There were a variety of menus from nearby takeaways in the property which can deliver to The Bowling Green (Bellini's in Matlock delivered and was excellent).
We did eat in The Miners Standard (open at lunch time til 2.30pm and in the evening, 6-8.30pm for food) however, food was very poor.
Both pubs in Birchover (The Druids Inn and The Red Lion) are also closed at lunchtime during the week but we did enjoy a lovely walk (round trip of about 2.5 hours).
All in all, a good break but do your homework before coming to Winster if you are planning on eating out.
We stayed at the croft for a week at the beginning of September . The cottage is lovely and we spent lots of time relaxing in the conservatory after long walks with our 3 dogs. We would certainly return as there are many walks you can do straight from the front door. If you are looking for a relaxing week with a comfortable home from home cottage then look no further .
We really enjoyed our stay in the beautiful village of Winster and had a fun week exploring the Peak District. The cottage was full of character and the sun room was a great place to relax with a book or a few board games whilst recovering from a busy day out. We were lucky enough to have some good weather too so got to enjoy the breathtaking views from the garden with a glass of wine in the early evening. The beds were comfortable and we loved the shower! However, we did feel the cottage needed a bit of TLC. There was a lot of mould in the bathroom. I had been looking forward to relaxing in the tub but the sight of all the mould on the wall facing me was rather off putting. The cottage also needed a thorough dust - there was a thick layer in quite a few easy to reach places. Also, the bedding in the main bedroom was fairly worn as were the towels. We did enjoy staying in the cottage though and would be happy to again/recommend to friends if it was in better condition.
The cottage is beautiful and can't really be faulted. Lots of kitchen utensils, very clean, plenty of board games and DVDs. Nicely decorated with amazing garden views overlooking the Peak District. The only thing slight downside to the cottage is the parking. As the house is at the top of a hill, the roads leading to the cottage are very narrow and there's not a lot of parking space. You'll have to do a 5 point turn to get out or reverse down the hill. It's ok during the week, as there's only a few other cars, but when the other holiday lets are occupied it can get busy. We found that the locals can get VERY funny and dictatorship with where you park.... so if you're a bit of a nervous driver or have a large vehicle I would advise to park at the Green which is round the back of the cottage (only a 1 minute walk).
What a beautiful little place this cottage is, and a lovely little town. The cottage is lovingly and carefully set up, with everything you could need, and has gorgeous views from the outside terrace. Very relaxing and peaceful. Winster is a great jump off point to explore the Peak District, and also has a couple of great pubs and lots of nice walks on the doorstep. We would definitely come again!
Fantastic from top to bottom beds extra comfy everything you need in kitchen brilliant cooker. The garden views that are amazing you can see for miles! You have walks straight off you door step winster itself in a lovely village with a local shop with everything in, will definitely be returned to the croft love it
