“Brilliant short break - recommend anytime of the year.”
Reviewed August 11, 2009

Really enjoyed the location, accommodation and friendliness of owners. Both David and Melanie really welcomed us continually asking if there is anything we needed.
The rooms were great for our family and with all amenities close at hand, catering was not a problem. Bakery, supermarket, post office and a fantastic ice-cream parlour all within a few minutes walk makes self catering so easy!
Our children were made really welcome by the owners children which made our break even more enjoyable!

From the outset, a rather bad experience. Rather than a friendly welcome, we were told the break-glass cylinders on the bars over the windows were very expensive and to leave them alone and told how the shower plug will get blocked and need cleaning every 2 days (accurate but perhaps it might be worth fixing this so guests don't need to?). After the tour of various do's and dont's, it feels as if you're more tolerated than welcome.

All beds in the cottage had unbearably soft mattresses. For a single night you might get away with this but after a few days of waking up with a sore back each morning, it starts to get a little frustrating.

The kitchen facilities were probably the most lacking. The cutlery draws were rather reminiscent of a student houses in terms of both the lack of cleanliness and mixture of aging / rusty implements. There's no washing up brush, draining stand, tea-towels or oven gloves provided - rather odd for a self-catering cottage.

The oven had been switched off before we arrived so a fun 5 minutes was spent trying to work out the required combination of three buttons to be pressed at once to reset the oven before it could be turned on.

The main bathroom has a broken bath plug (bring a pair of pliers if you want to get the plug back out), the grouting has seen better days and cobwebs suggest that the cleaning could do with being a little more regular.

All-in-all, disappointing. If you want a relaxing week in this area of the peak district try Beck Cottage in Eyam instead - it's a spotless, comfortable and homely cottage with everything you could possibly want and only 5 miles away

We always welcome comments and it is a shame that Paul did not inform us of his issues at the time-

In terms of the break glass cylinders - the Barn is a Grade II Listed conversion and the small window bars are a health & safety regulation enforced on us via the National Park Authority. Nobody in the past 15 years that we have been offering our 4 star accommodation has ever mentioned them!

In terms of the beds, all the matresses are very new and the great majority of our customers tell us they love the beds!

The kitchen and the rest of the Barn is always spotlessly clean and fresh. We have changed our cleaner recently and if Paul had mentioned any problems, we would have instantly addressed the matter. The Barn does have tea-towels, gloves and washing up facilities I am at a loss at to why Paul did not find them! The cottages are both extremely well kitted out - our 4 Star Rating is dependent on having quality fitted kitchens. The kitchen in the Barn does not stock any aging or rusting implements - in fact quite the opposite.

Finally the bath plug has been replaced! and the grouting mentioned addressed.

We are a 4 Star Englaish Tourist Board Inspected property and pride ourselves on our welcome, how spotlessly clean the cottages are and the enjoyment.of your visit to us. Our number of repeat visitors is up to around 30% of our business, year on year and this review is certainly not reflective of the many 100's of very satisfied customers we have enjoyed staying with us.
