“Friendly and Cosy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2008

My mother, aunt, myself and my little cocker all stayed here for 2 nights when we visited a game fair. We arrived quite early the room wasn't ready which is quite understandable as they have a 12. o clock check out, we went into the bar which was cosy with a real fire going and had soup and sandwiches. We were then told the room was ready so we drove down and parked right outside we went in and it had bunk beds which mam and aunty had fun getting into (no problem after a couple of glasses of wine) it had the bathroom opposite and through a door you had a double bed, sitting area and open plan kitchen with patio doors which was handy for the dog, it also had a table and chairs outside so you could sit out in the better weather. Lovely views over the fields and plenty of places to walk and give the dog a run. The room itself was clean and comfortable but had a used look, need of some modernisation but for the price it was very acceptable (you pay the Ritz prices you get the Ritz). The staff was very friendly and nothing was a problem, the food was good and plenty to choose from at breakfast. I liked that you could take the dog into the bar with you, it was good for them to meet other dogs, mine had a ball. But was well behaved. We would certainly stay here again if we were ever in that area.

  • Liked — It accepted dogs and you could take them into the bar with you. Staff friendliness
  • Disliked — nothing

Just spent 3 very pleasant nights (with our dogs) at the Dog and Partridge. It was just what we wanted a warm cosy bar (for the dogs as well as us) and a pleasant room which whilst basic (but good for a 2*) was comfortably big enough for 2 adults and 2 dogs. Staff very friendly and helpful in what is clearly a family run business. The food was generally good particularly breakfast. An eclectic wine list and selection of beers at reasonable prices. Fellow patrons ranged from families, through fellow dog lovers to friends enjoying a weekend away. Overall, a great weekend that hit the spot.

Stayed here on 20th March 2008. The booking confirmation letter stated that we could book in from 1500 hrs and would be greeted with a cream tea. This implied to us that this would be complimentary but this was not the case. There had been no pictures of the rooms on the website and we now know why! The rooms were seperate from the Inn, which we already knew, but they were like cabins on a butlins camp! A cheap four poster bed in a room not big enough to accommodate it. The shower was just a mixer on the bath with no screen or possible way to attach it to the wall and have a shower properly, although this didn't really matter since the shower had only 2 settings anyway, scalding or freezing! At 2am, we woke to find water pouring down the wall into the electrical socket! When booking out in the morning I mentioned these issues and was told that nobody had complained about the shower before and that the windows had only just been fitted. I was made to feel as though I was exagerating. The charge for the room for 1 night was £80 which was absolutely extortionate for the standard of accommodation, even if the shower had worked and the rain had stayed outside! I would not recommend a stay here.

  • Liked — Very little
  • Disliked — Uncomfortable bed, No shower, Raining indoors!

Although we do welcome reviews on our hotel, I did feel that this review was un-fair .

I would like to make a few issues clear

We often include a Cream Tea or Afternoon Tea when a guest is staying with us on one of our Seasonal or Special Breaks eg our Easter break included cream tea on arrival. (This would be clearly advertised within the particular break details) Unfortunately when you made your booking with us it was just purely Bed and Breakfast. On all confirmation letters we clearly state what is included during a stay with us therefore your letter clearly stated that Full English Breakfast and VAT was included in your Room Tariff at no point did we offer a complimentary cream tea either verbally or in writing.

We are sorry that you were not happy with your room. We feel our rooms are all of a good size.

On check out you did however bring to our attention that you had problems with the shower and window during your stay. I can assure you that all complaints are taken seriously and after you checked out we did investigate and drew the following conclusions - We found that the shower was working as it should and that the water on the window was actually condensation- however as a gesture of good will we did reduce your bill to compensate.

I thank you though for having the time to air your views

Kindest Regards

We travelled to the Dog and Partridge primarily because of the "dog-friendly" nature of the place. We wanted a break with our hound and decided that this place, in the glorious countryside of the Peaks, was an ideal sounding proposition.

How right we were.

The rooms are large and comfortable and clean and tidy. The decor may be a touch dated but then I didn't expect "cutting edge" in a country inn in Derbyshire. Most of the rooms are set away from the pub/restaurant in the surrouunding grounds. This gives the ambience of a "motel" type environment and is, imo, all the better for it. The staff were all very friendly and they couldn't do enough for us. The food was marvellous and the choices were great. Dog owners are allowed to take their pets into the bar where you can choose from the restaurant a la carte menu as well as the bar menu.

We planned to spend most of the weekend out and about walking and the owner was very knowledgeable and helpful about what would be a good walk for us beginners. The Inn provided a packed lunch for us to take with us which kept the hunger pangs at bay.

The local area is wonderful and many fine attractions lie within a short drive. The nearest town is about 4 miles away and is of decent size.

We are sure that when we want another dog-friendly holiday / break this is where we will be heading to.

  • Liked — The way most of the rooms are separate from the pub
  • Disliked — The fact that the comfy sofas were in reception and not in the bar!!

My partner and I just revisited the Dog and Partridge as a joint celebration of our engagement, my birthday, our anniversary and of course Valentines Day. He logged on to find this stunning package for Valentines Weekend. We were pampered with a perfect suite, genuinely lovely staff and divine homemade food. You instantly feel a part of the family when you arrive - like old friends catching up whilst being waited on hand and foot. I adore the quaint bar and the 5 bottles of Zinfandel my partner and I got hooked on. NOW the food. WOW - starting with the breakfast, which is an entire conservatory of fresh and dried fruit, an array of fruit juices, muesli bars, spreads and cereal. All of this is pre and or post dining to a Full English Breakfast with all the trimmings. OH and I nearly forgot for lunch we were gifted a lovers platter with sandwiches, fish fingers and sweets - it was the most cutest lunch I have eaten. Then we enjoyed two five course meals all of which surpassed all expectations complete with love heart food shapes where possible. We gorged ourselves with all the meats from Duck to Pork to Fish Pie and steak with an equally wide variety of entrees, soups and our favourite sorbet complete with an ice shaped love heart. Each night we waddled back to our rooms to lay in happiness til morning. Oh and we also got £13 tickets to Alton Towers for select rides which is just around the corner from the D&P. I tell ya I feel revived and ready to go back to work and the gym! If you feel like a treat at the most reasonable price please visit the 'Dog and Partridge' we've decided to make it an annual event. only 360 odd days to go.

Our family spent a wonderful 7 nights over Christmas at the Dog & Partridge. We were made to feel welcome from the very start. All the staff were excellent with our small children and very flexible with menu options. The varying daytime and evening activities offered were good with complete freedom to opt in or out.

The family room was spacious and warm and accommodated us comfortably.

The food was excellent and plentiful and everyone was very hospitable.

Just back from a 4 night new year break. First impressions were that the bar with blazing fire and seating area was much too small (30 people stayed 1st night) but when an additional 50 customers arrived for the following period, we found that seating was always available within the pub itself. Rooms were spacious and adequately furnished with comfortable beds. The food provided was of a good quality with plenty of choice. The pub is a family run pub with European staff working for them, however all were very friendly, helpful and couldn't do enough fior you. The family in particular really worked extremely hard to ensure enjoyment was had. It must be stressed any entertainment quizzes, games etc are very low key but enjoyable. A short walk was arranged and an extremely good, well thought out car-treasure hunt (40 miles roundtrip) was also enjoyable. The nearest town, shop is about 4/5 miles away and car journies and walking are the main activities for this area. I would recommend for a restful break in an easy going environmental.

  • Liked — Friendliness of the staff/management
  • Disliked — Bar area too small but depends on numbers in hotel
